Nov. 25, 2005 The misconceptions, misperceptions, and outright manipulated lies surrounding this war with Iraq have divided our Nation and the world. What America needs to do (aka the Bush Administration) is to face up to how they tainted public opinion to achieve their sad and sick results by placing us into another quagmire much like Vietnam. Once culpability and regret is acknowledged we can move forward. Then they need to create a feasible plan for getting us out of that mess. I propose the following. First, I propose the regular and phased withdraw of our troops from Iraq beginning in January of 2006. Second, we need to pass the baton to the people of Iraq and allow them to train, recruit, and compensate their military or peace-keeping forces as they see fit. They are a capable and intelligent lot, trust them to make the right choices for themselves. We need not be the determining factor as to how well equipped their people are to handle the insurgents that we have allowed to fester and thwart our progress. It is my firm belief that this in-fighting will curtail as soon as we withdraw. We need to allow the people of Iraq a choice as to how best they want to be governed and not force democracy upon them by placing our talking heads into their leadership posts. Once the people of Iraq have determined how they want to be governed and who or what system should be best to govern them we need to establish a dialogue that sets the tone for peace and prosperity for all in that region. Diplomacy is the key to the success of this undertaking. The people of Iraq need to determine how best to solicit bids for the reconstruction of their state and the government of the US needs to butt out. Contracts need not be awarded to the most wealthy and well connected companies in America, but around the globe based on who can do the best job for the least amount of money and in the allotted time frame. This mindset sets the basis for fair trade and cooperative alliances, not the "good ole' boy" system that the Bush Administration adheres to and serves to further alienate us from our key allies. Iraq and the Middle-east can handle their own affairs better than the Bush appointed leaders because they are intimately familiar with the cultural nuances, norms, customs. Whether it be due to lack of understanding or the turning of a deaf ear the issues of these people and beliefs they hold elude the Bush Administration and their hired guns. The Middle-east is not a mini America and they should not be forced to adhere to all things western just because Bush thinks that is the best case scenario and serves to further his own interests in their oil rich state.
