CNN's "X" On Dick Cheney's Face Was Only A Malfunction

By Ken Hughes
Nov. 23, 2005

For anyone who missed it Sunday evening while Vice President Dick Cheney was making a speech explaining the build up to the Iraq war CNN imposed a flashing “X” over the Vice Presidents face with a sub caption. “Cheney I Do Not Believe It Is [the rest illegible.]

CNN claims it was merely a computer malfunction. The flashing “X” perhaps, the subtitle, maybe not, I don’t think so. That has all the markings of a political statement by someone at CNN. We’ve known for a long time CNN is the Al Jazeera of the American media. They were admittedly, literally in bed with Saddam Hussein during Operation Desert Strom. CNN had an agreement they wouldn’t publish cretin information if allowed to remain in Iraq. That amounts to a cover-up or worse by CNN.

It seems these glitches only appear when a Republican is before the cameras. Why didn’t the flashing “X” appear when Congressman John Murtha was on spouting his opposition to the war in Iraq? As a side note, I remind you all the Generals through Privets fighting this war in Iraq are all just as heroic as John Murtha. They are more in tune with modern warfare than Congressman Murtha is. He and his companions lost that war, perhaps because Murtha is doing what congress did for the soldiers in Vietnam. Pulling the rug out from under them, leaving them swinging in the wind. Suggesting everyman or women who served in the military is a hero is a bit of a stretch. If we call them all heroes how do we honor those who served above and beyond over those who were simply there. John Murtha couldn’t carry water for today’s Marine fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Incidentally, the supposed war hawk John Murtha has been anti war for the past two years. The media blowing his criticism out of proportion now is just one more way of their stirring the pot of discontent for some not all of the American People.

It’s time for a congressional investigation of the media. There isn’t much that can be done with the first amendment. The first amendment doesn’t mention reporters. It basically says the government won’t abridge freedom of the press, If we define the word press collectively then the first amendment doesn’t protect the individual reporter. That’s of course as much a stretch as a reporters right to say anything they want with immunity is a stretch. Congress can and should strengthen the liable laws. That would at least give the accused a fighting chance with the media.

Over blown egos in the Media and Congress with a need to fill 24/7 news programs with content has created an atmosphere where truth and facts don’t stand a chance of surviving. What was once serious news has joined Reality TV as entertainment. If one desires facts, the internet is the best place to look for them. Even on the internet, one must proceed with caution. Justifiably we’ve become a society of unbelievers.

Truth and honesty can’t be legislated, distortions and dishonesty can be voted out, at the polling booth and with the on off switch. If we want a better America, we the people are going to have to create it. They, politicians, and the media aren’t going to do it for us.

By the grace of God and the will of the people, this Republic has survived 230 years. It’ll make it through Political Correctness and Liberalism, but at what cost?
