Nov. 20, 2005 President Bush is over in China preaching to them about "freedom". Beginning with religion. Then for all else that is democratic. Did they ask for his humble opinion? I think not! In his overzealous and distorted vision of what he wants the world to be he has not considered the people of China, but merely his own wishes much like a spoiled and impetuous child. When he begins to babble nonsensical things to leaders of other countries with very diverse beliefs, cultural norms, and societal structures I must ask- Is he mad, stupid, or merely a self appointed apostle spreading Christianity? First let's look at what Merriam-Webster defines as freedom. From the web site www.m-w.com we find this- Main Entry: free·dom Pronunciation: 'frE-d&m Function: noun 1 : the quality or state of being free: as a : the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action b : liberation from slavery or restraint or from the power of another : America may be a melting pot, but we should not inflict our beliefs on all other nations around the globe. They have a right and fundamental freedom-as we do-to set their own rules and policies, customs and norms, ceremonies and events as well as a host of other items. We cannot and should not interfere or make thinly veined threats against countries and people that do not function as we do. What happened to tolerance, compassion, diplomacy, and restraint? The best way to effectuate change is to change yourself and then those around you will have to change in response to your changes. Force does not effectively create change, but fosters hostility and harbors resentments toward those that forced change. Case in point, Iraq. Maybe they (the people of Iraq) wanted to have a change of government or power structure, but they did not invite us to take out Saddam and create a more hostile, chaos filled, unstable country and world. Change takes thoughtful planning and effort on part of all participants. Creating a strategic roadmap can aid one in this endeavor, but it will take time, resources, focus, and diplomacy-things lacking in Bush's approach. A strategic roadmap helps to align your strategies with your vision/mission and long-term objectives giving you milestones or targets that can be measured, controlled, and changed as necessary to keep your plan on track and moving toward certain success. (MGT 578, Week 5, UOP On-line, eResource) My advice is that the entire Bush Administration take a few courses on Diplomacy, Planning, and Resource Allocation before opening their mouths and spouting freedom for the world! With those basics under their belts they might begin to have a certain appreciation for differing cultures and their customs, norms, and ceremonies. As well as how best to set forth a plan, communicate it, and execute it to achieve success and not just stumble forward with no plan espousing jibberish under the guise of freedom.
