Rockiter The Divine Dancer

By John L. Waters
Nov. 19, 2005

Rockiter was her name. I knew her back in ’82, but not in the Biblical sense. She’d go to a local dance hall and dance so beautifully that even experienced dancers would stop and just look at her go! She truly was an extraordinary dancer.

This is a true story. I watched Rockiter dance on the deck of my house.

The way she dressed, she often looked like a Gypsy.

My son had a record of Saturday Night Fever. I set the needle in the groove between numbers, turned up the volume and opened the living room window. Music flooded out of the house and Rockiter whirled and spun like a Sufi. Indeed, she had hooked right into the dervish spirit.

Rockiter was Jewish, and in other ways as well she was rather like Thomas Keyes’ first wife Lori as Mr Keyes briefly described her in his recent U-K article. Rockiter was into astrology, numerology, palmistry, Bach Flower remedies and cartloads of other alternative stuff. She danced for me with sublime grace. I wouldn’t say that her genius was rational intellect, but I wouldn’t have said that of my wife, either. Neither would I even say that of myself. I found, however, that Rockiter’s physical movements were extraordinary.

Before she started to dance, Rockiter smoked a joint. The resulting biochemistry rapidly altered her brain activity. This alteration enabled the woman to “let go and let God” so-to-speak. Under the influence of marijuana and the music of Saturday Night Fever Rockiter had no thought as she moved freely in space. Her slippered feet made scarcely any sound on my redwood deck. As the sage Jiddu Krishnamurti often had done, Rockiter totally emptied her mind of all chatter. She didn’t think, she didn’t talk, she didn’t sing. Her entire presence was in her dancing. This is why when Rockiter danced, so many people stopped their dancing and looked at her with wonder. She was so light she almost was levitating. Later I wondered if Rockiter had developed and tapped into an idiot savant talent comparable to the amazing physical talent exhibited by Forrest Gump.

Now this is just an account. This is a mere testimonial. A skeptic isn’t bound to pay any attention to such things. So what difference does it make? Moreover, if you came to visit me, and Rockiter were present, and you played some fine music that inspired her, she would dance for you. I have to say, however, that Rockiter left Humboldt County in 1986 and I haven’t seen her or heard from her in years. It was no chance event that a younger man who enjoyed dancing caught her fancy and in a passionate romance they danced away.

Thomas Keyes’ account of his first wife Lori reminded me of Rockiter and so I felt obliged to contribute this short article to Useless Knowledge Magazine.

Rockiter was a real person. Only her name has been changed. In her what is extraordinary (or let us just say beyond the limits of performance by a rational-intellectual person) was frequently manifest.

Interestingly enough, Rockiter couldn’t learn the dance steps in grade school. In fact at school the other girls laughed at Rockiter and called her names because she was unable to memorize the popular dance steps. Nobody knew what was wrong with Rockiter. Only when this woman had learned to alter her brain activity did her amazing talent manifest itself!

It makes me wonder how many millions of ordinary people are devalued geniuses or unstimulated and undeveloped idiot savants, and whether Lori herself might have had a special talent that school never developed in her and that Thomas Keyes, undeniably intelligent as he is, never ever witnessed, recognized, or understood this talent.

I end this article with a quote from a fairly modern philosopher-prophet:
"There is more wisdom in your body than in your deepest philosophy."
Friedrich Nietzsche
