Ships Are Passing In The Night

By John L. Waters
Nov. 18, 2005

Ships are passing in the night. Some are loaded with high IQ people. Others are loaded with low IQ people. Some are loaded with true believers. Some are loaded with skeptics. Some are loaded with white-skinned tourists going to Brazil. Others are loaded with black-skinned tourists going to France.

In each ship the people on board are certain they are going to a good place where they honestly desire to go. Their minds are made up. Their plans are finalized.

This is a vision of present reality, and large vessels passing one another without concern from those on board the other vessel. Indeed, on board every ship, the passengers are certain that they are bound for the Right Place. 100% certainty floats everyone's boat. The modern rage is for risk-free travel.

Meanwhile, in my solitary drifting canoe I am worried that I will soon be totally swamped by a giant wave as one of those giant ships cuts it too close. Even so, I am doomed to solitude because I have some strange and different ideas. I'm not really eager to be on a large ship bound for Glory or for some other tourist trap. You see, I'm something of a maverick. I remain aloof and observe the oceanic traffic lines. I still am a conduit delivering yogic force.

Indeed, Useless Knowledge Magazine is like a vast ocean upon which each clever and confident columnist advances a point of view and plows a long and deep furrow in the ocean like a great ship and carries a number of passengers- those readers who subscribe to his or her definition of Glory. For some it is valor in a military battle. For some it is high IQ or perfect word usage or perfect logic. For some it is pure poetry. For some it is the firm belief that they and only they are correct. For some it is shooting down other columnists as if we are nothing but ducks and they are crack shots. There are many other types of writers, as well!

The metaphors may be mixed, but you get the point.

If GOD exists, he/she/it is laughing out loud.

If there is no GOD, we readers can laugh anyway.

There is still poetry. There is still lightheartedness. There is still the Good Humor Man. There is still Trickster.

There is still Coyote aka the Court Jester.

There are a great many ships, and they just keep passing, Passing, PASSING in the night.

And nobody wants a catastrophe like the Titanic.

Even so, mistakes do happen, and once in awhile a writer does drop out of U-K.

GOD or no GOD, Coyote endures.
