Nov. 13, 2005 Supposedly President Bush is a graduate Business major. (his actions make me question if he ever attended class) However, any first year business major would know more about business than he obviously does. For those of you that may be unfamiliar with what leaders do or the skills they possess let's begin there and then work into strategic thinking that could really benefit our government overall. Leaders should be able to aptly plan, organize, control, and lead those under them. This takes thoughtful and frequent communication of what you hope to accomplish and a comprehensive strategic plan including the allocation of resources, responsibility relationships, and contingency factors. (MGT 500, week 2, Bateman/Knecki/Rue, eResource UOP) Has the Bush Administration done this ever? It would appear not, but how can we be sure? We need to look no further than their (Bush Administration) lack of plans regarding this bungled war with Iraq for the complete history on that question. There are several benefits they could reap from planning. They would begin with the ability to check on the progress of specific actions (they have no idea what happens from one day to the next-either that or they do not care), coordinate activities (we would not be caught by surprise calling this war over-clearly it is not. This war might become another potential Vietnam and drag on and on), think ahead on important issues (like maybe how are we going to get out of there gracefully and without further loss of life), and to cope with uncertainty by having a contingency plan (what about those insurgents?). (MGT 500, week 3, Bateman/Knecki/Rue, eResource UOP) Leaders need to be able to set realistic, specific, measurable, attainable, and results oriented goals. These goals need to have deadlines in order to get them readily accomplished. If Bush cannot set goals then he should surround himself with someone that can. If he wants to use a management by objectives approach then he can have a whole team set forth a list of objectives and then prioritize them. Once they are prioritized they can begin to develop action plans, review performance and reward the results. He can even claim it was all his idea! (MGT 500, week 4, Bateman/Knecki/Rue, eResource UOP) Maybe our entire government needs to go back to school and learn how to manage this mess and pull our country out of the tailspin we are in fiscally, economically, and culturally. We need to seriously rethink our productivity, competitive position in relation to the rest of the world, technological lagging instead of leadership, and public responsibility by instituting programs that help to foster and reward technological innovation, greater efficiency and productivity in the workplace, employee relations and development via job creation, and their responsibility to the American public at large. It may be too late for the Bush Administration to get it, but it is not too late for our Senators and Congress people to move in this direction and help America get back to being number one! To take action please contact your State representatives and tell them how remiss this Administration has been to all of America. It is the voices of many that can effectuate change.
