CSI And How Forensics Has Captivated My Intellect

By Argile Stox

Ever since the CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) franchise began on CBS (Columbia Broadcasting System) the scientific field of forensics has captivated my intellect. Take the simple act of walking down the street – I now look down at the ground and look closer at discarded items. For a moment, the items become clues to a crime; yet, there was no crime committed. However, I begin to think about collecting and analyzing fingerprints, DNA, enhancing faded printed images and a host of other tests. In addition, I look at skid marks on pavement, wondering what kind of tire they belong too, the car, and how fast the vehicle was traveling. The rainbow of colors in a substance that sparkle on top of a puddle of water causes an immediate thought – what is the chemical makeup of the liquid? It may sound like I have too much time on my hands and you may be right.

Two days ago, Tracy & I were in Best Buy shopping for video games. Strolling down one of the aisles, I spotted CSI “Dark Motives” & CSI Miami. “Oh, WOW!” I thought. “Now I can put the many years of watching the programs to good use and try to solve a crime.” When I held up the two boxes of CSI games in Tracy’s line of sight she said “WOW!” as well.

When watching the CSI series an entire forensic team encapsulates the crime scene and collects evidence to solve a crime. When playing the games – YOU ARE IT! Although you are guided through the crime scene puzzle by one of the charactors of the TV show in the game, you collect evidence, send it to the lab, talk to witnesses and rule them in or out as suspects – it becomes very frustrating when you run out of leads. Each game allows you to “start over” and use the knowledge attained from past mistakes. There are a number of games in each; however, the player can not go to a new game until a crime is solved.

I started playing one of the games in CSI “Dark Motives” at 10:00pm, and my brain quickly became mush. After six “start over” tries, I looked at my watch and it read 6:00am! As of this writing, I am still stuck on Game One. Yesterday, I Googled “CSI PC Games” for help, and found an EZBoard message board that deals with questions about the CSI games. I e-mailed an individual about the difficulties and waiting for a reply.

During one of my failed attempts to solve a crime, I asked Tracy to play the game. Her brain quickly leaked out of her ears too. We began to discuss the game, trying to figure out what we had missed. Our conversation at 2:30am lasted about an hour. For two authors to stare blankly at each other and shrugging our shoulders in disbelief that we could not precede...., was a Kodak Moment!

As this article is being drafted, the two CSI game boxes sit next to the computer, mocking me. Time passes very quickly when playing those games. I fear that 2005 will turn into 2010 before I solve them – LOL! Has anyone out there have a similar experience with the CSI games? I could use some HELP!
