Nov. 8, 2005 Let me preface this article by saying that I am against war and believe that the Bush Administration misled and manipulated the American people and our allies into beginning this quagmire with Iraq. As time marches on, it has become painfully apparent that they never even had a plan and continue to stumble and fail without seeking resolution to this ill-conceived undertaking for all parties involved. How could they have approached this conflict more intelligently? Let’s begin by getting the best possible minds working on this issue and then asking the right questions about why, or even if, we should go to war in the first place. Those could have been; What should our goals be in Iraq? At what point does military intervention make sense? What does our success in this endeavor depend upon? How do we reconcile our ideas and strategic interests in this undertaking? Upon reflection, we can see clearly that there was an enormous failure on behalf of our intelligence community compounded by a summary rush to judgment and thus flimsy and false pre-emptive actions used by the Bush Administrations approach to this war. Prior to embarking on any sort of conflict it is extremely important to surround yourself with the best possible military and diplomatic minds. Was Bush remiss here? Yes. Who could he have selected to aid him in this plan? I would suggest the great minds of Henry Kissinger, Jimmy Carter, Colin Powell, and Bill Clinton. Why? They are intelligent men that are accustomed to and possess extensive expertise in the negotiations of world policy, approaches to warfare, and creating peace. Their perspectives would have been balanced, tempered, fresh and un-jaded by juxtaposition to the Bush Administrations follies. It should be apparent to the Bush Administration that this war with Iraq cannot be won militarily, but that we need to pursue closure by political and diplomatic measures. The time is NOW! We can gain insight by the Paris Agreement struck during Nixon’s tenure and the Vietnam War. We could inflict similar measures to stop or curtail this rising conflict and bring a peaceful future to the people of Iraq. What would that take? All strategic processes should be directed toward determining what is important and where we should direct our energies and focus. Next, you prioritize and develop a platform. Step 1; We could negotiate a cease-fire with the insurgents. This is where the new coalition government can show that they are capable of governing without America’s help-very important point. Step 2; Then we can begin some conditional withdraw of our troops, plan for the return and accountability of any/all POW’s and MIA’s, and negotiate between the parties for a peaceful political future.
