Nov. 5, 2005 Writing is such a personal and subjective act it’s difficult to conceive that we who write with our hearts, and sometimes our minds, should want to vote another writer off of Useless-Knowledge. We sit as judges of world events, movies, political mish-mash, and religious bashing...but should we be the judges of one another? I have given this a great deal of thought. I personally will not vote in such a run-off. It just strikes me as a vote for the suppression of free thoughts and freedom of speech. Last year, if I remember correctly, a lady writer was voted off the columnist list. She was not the most gifted writer in the world, yet her thoughts and her writings were valuable and worthy to her. There are not that many “professional” writers on this site. With the exception of Robert Reyes and few a others, who in fact receive money for there real writing jobs, there are no pros on this site. Not every writer is eloquent in what they say, not everyone is a Pulitzer Prize candidate. Certainly, there is a great dichotomy of thoughts among columnists. I have seen more body slams on Useless Knowledge than on the World Federation of Wrestling. Sometimes the take-downs are bloody and merciless, yet they are sometimes entertaining and educational. My hats off to Ron Lewis. He has entertained me. Ron does tell it like it is. Personally, I find it difficult to trample through the constant hammering by the religious right, who give us Bible doctrine almost daily, or the pro war activist who never publicly admit the war was a misguide disaster (even thought they know it’s true). It’s aggravating and tedious to read the constant bombardment of Natalee Holloway speculations, but guess what, it’s what the writers believe in their heart that keeps their fingers on the keyboard.
I absolutely am certain that many folks don’t read or agree with my constant yammering about the wrongness of the war in Iraq. For that matter, I am certain that many writers here get sick of my Bushisms and my political cynicism. Am I off the columnist list next year? Will you be off next year? To get Biblical, and you know I am stretching some to do that, the man Jesus was controversial and put to death for his radical religious beliefs. Are we the Romans? Are we casting stones at glass houses? My vote will be the same next year. Mr. Editor, I abstain.
