Mugsy, Here's Looking At You Kid

Craig D. “Mugsy” Calam, 56, of Hackensack, an actor and producer, died of cancer yesterday in Nutley.

Mr. Calam was a longtime cast member of "The Uncle Floyd Show" on local access cable television, as well as creator of The 11th Hour and After Hour television programs. He was producer and director of numerous television and Internet productions.

During his career, Mr. Calam worked with the musicians Les Paul, The Ramones, the Smitherenes and Cindy Lauper, as well as The Vivino Brothers, Cousin Bruce Morrow, Members of the Monty Python comedy troupe, smothers Brothers and other celebrities.

Born in New Jersey, Mr. Calam lived in Hackensack for many years. Surviving is a son, Hugo.

I had the pleasure of working with Mugsy and he indeed was funny and inventive. I first met him in 1976 while working for Uncle Floyd Vivino for “The Uncle Floyd Show” in West Orange, New Jersey.

He joined the cast along with Scott Gordon, Netto, Looney Skip Rooney and others. I soon left the show but watched for the twenty or so more years the show was on the air. Mugsy was a driving force using new ideas for that program.

Mugsy brought many song parodies to the show including Bob Dilly, Neil Yuck and many more zany bits. He will be missed and it saddened me deeply to hear of his passing. Mugsy, Here’s looking at you kid.

I wanted to do something here that would say goodbye as well as remember my own mortality. I have said good bye to so many in the past and although this man was not the huge success some of the others were he was one of the all time greats.

Many of us think it can’t happen to us but we are not immune to the ending of life. Take care of yourself reader because no one else is watching out for you.
