Nov. 30, 2004 I have been speaking with several persons who will remain nameless as not to slander any one organization. The word not for profit seems to be getting some bad reviews. A non profit organization like nursing homes in Manhattan are paying out very good salaries to their employees by writing grants and getting the State of New York to support them. I thought that working for a not for profit nursing home organization's meant less for the employee's and more for the residents but it seems to be taking a nasty turn. Residents of some nursing homes are checked in with only the clothes on their backs and nothing else. The poor resident who might not have any outside help and their Medicare benefits are being given to nursing homes that cannot even write a grant that would give them money to get these residents the proper clothing for them to enjoy their recreational activities. What is this world coming too where a director can bring home almost one hundred thousand dollars while the residents can't even get a pair of pants from the ten dollar store. Living in this world trying to make it and just getting by is hard enough but to get old and not have anything and all of your support being taken away is absurd. The State needs not to be so free with sending in investigators looking at dollars but look at the real issue of care. Are the residents being emotionally distressed because they are not given the bare necessities mainly clothing. Most nursing homes have large foodservice employees cooking and cleaning in the kitchen, but the real issue here is outsource and save. It would be cheaper and a great savings to hire corporations like ARA foods to supply contract employees rather than hire foodservice employees. Clothes are being donated to the residents by Community Action Network organizations while the employee's of these nursing homes are walking off with large checks and the residents are forced to wear hand me down clothing unless they have family that cares. I believe that someone should look into this and not just pass on by like getting old means that you are not being treated fairly. Several nursing homes in Manhattan are given an A plus rating by the State but what about the issue of care. In a room where not everyone has a radio or a television is not A plus. But maybe I am missing the point but still if you have family in a nursing home look around at some of the others that do not have family and you will notice some of these valid points that have been mentioned. ------------ Arthur L.
