Nov. 29, 2004 First off I want to say that a woman does not have to be black and raped for the prosectutor and the defense attorneys to attack her credibility. During the sixties a black woman was raped by a jailor in a North Carolina jail cell. She then killed her attacker and went on the run. She went on trial and finally received some justice. But this case is not so unusual in that most women who are raped face the same thing the author of the article that appeared here face. I was stalked by a white man, and I am white myself. Because he was a snitch for the Commowealth of Virginia he walked out of the courtroom a free man. During the sixties I was raped and dragged over a brick wall. That awful period cost me two months of my memory. There were those that wondered what my baby would look like when she was born. It is not that unusual that a woman who has been raped has to undergo a rigorous trial of her own morals when the case comes to court. Most do not report the crime because of the questioning put to them by defense attornies. Even though the law says in most states that what a woman wears cannot be used against her. Unfortunately the good old boy society still exists and a woman is usually the one on trial instead of the man that raped her. Rape is a matter of control and has nothing to do with sex. In the Commonwealth of Virginia it makes no difference who the victim is or their age or color. Why does this happen? Because every low life criminal has to have a reason for why he went out and raped a woman or killed someone. I feel badly for the author of the article but she should not feel alone. Truthfully speaking it should not happen to anyone no matter who the complaint is. This is one reason why I am proud of the new piece of legislature that President George W. Bush signed into law. The Debbie Smith Act. She feels isolated because too often women are made by the justice system to feel that way. It will not matter what country you are in. Some countries allow the men to do anything they want to a woman. Her color won't change that but I am glad she has a ministry going. That much her attacker can't take away from her. It has taken me years to forgive the first man that raped me. I said before that cervical cancer is one thing that continues to haunt me. But I do hope in time she will find some way of dealing with this crime. As a woman though I commend her for her article but she should know because of her color it does not change the way most women are made to feel. Julia Roberts has given birth to her babies and I wish her well. She waited a long time to become a mother and I trust her babies will thrive and grow. It does not matter what she named them probably the son's name could be an old Irish name for boys. It will be one to grow into and pretty soon she will be at home with the babies. Raising children these days is a tough job but it is one she choose to do. Congratulations on the birth of your children. ------------ About the author Judy T. Lloyd: The author of four books.
