Can The Democrats Remain A National Party?

Zell Miller, blasted the Democrats as no longer being a viable national party. Ann coulter compared them to the long defunct Whig party. As much as I like to read her columns and admire her for taking on the left she was wrong. The Democrats are nothing like the Whigs. They are, I believe, a reincarnation of the Federalists.

The difference? Well I admit that most people don't care. Both parties are long gone and talking about them is only a matter of historical curiousity. But history is vitally important to understand the present. The Whigs were a national party, able to compete in all regions, electing governors, senators, congressmen, and local legislatures. The Federalists were elitist, and alomst completely confined to new england. Elitism, like fashion, changes with the times.The federalists elitism was based on support for the wealthy business interests. The democrats elitism is based on the opposite. They don't care what it is so long as it goes against what ordinary people believe.

That is the plight of the Democratic party. Confined to the northeast, the west coast, and the upper midwest(although I think they will soon lose those states). So the Democrats attack on two fronts. Blasting the GOP as the party of the plutocrats, at the same time being the party of the stupid country bumpkins.

You know the line. Democratic counties subsidze the GOP counties, and they are more educated. All propaganda.

The Democrats aren't going anywhere, at least not anytime in the near future. They will be able to compete on the state level, but will have increasing trouble to compete on a national level.

According to the LA times Bush won 97 out of 100 of the fastest growing counties. The Democrats will be confined to the rust belt and the big cities. Perhaps insulting 60 million people by calling them dumb bigots will make them a national party again. Hmmm... well maybe not.
