Nov. 28, 2004 Blessed are the poor in spirit: For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. For they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: For they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: For they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: For they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: For they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: For they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall say all manner of evil against you falsely for my name sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: For great is your reward in heaven: For so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. King James Bible - Matthew 5:3-12 It’s fitting that I bring these words to you at this time of the season. Jesus Christ said these words to a multitude of his fellow countrymen over two thousand years ago. At that time the world was suffering from death, pestilence, destruction, man’s inhumanity to man, evil dictatorships, war, and hunger. In other words, not much has changed. And why is that? Well maybe because of the afore mentioned afflictions that have plagued man throughout history. And who is to blame for all these maladies? We are. As I mentioned last week in my column, if the world could come together as one then we would be able to put aside all these torments and bring about a New World. One filled with plenty. Where children don’t lose their parents because of Aids. Or parents don’t lose their children because of gang violence or drugs. I can only Imagine. And so should we all. But will we? I’ll venture to say no. Unfortunately politicians, religious leaders, and financiers rule our world and they have no imagination. All they have is an over inflated ego and an over zealous need to place every one of us under their control. And we let then. We let them by not speaking up, as they are doing now in the Ukraine. We let them by electing them and letting them run our lives, as we are did in America. We let by selling our souls to them for that extra bit of shine or glitter that attracts our eyes. And for those reasons, mankind, we, will never be more than what we are right now. You are looking at the golden age of the
world. Enjoy it while it lasts. Because I have a
feeling that from here on out we’re in for a
bumpy ride.
In 1998 and 1999 Mr. Anthony’s poem “What is Winning All About?” was selected by the International Library of Poetry to be placed in their anthology book of American poets for 1998. They contacted him again the following year to seek his permission for “Winning” to be included in their Millennium anthology collection. He, of course, gladly gave it. You can access his webpage at
