To The Memory Of Che Guevara

By Stephen Winter
Nov. 28, 2004

Mention the name Che Guevara and you will get a dozen opinions but the one redeeming quality of all was he was charismatic. Born June 14, 1928, in Argentina, Ernesto Che Guevara died as he lived, a revolutionary in the same mold as Jesus Christ, Sam Houston, George Washington and Oliver Cromwell.

Che Guevara was a man among men, instinctive, brillant, a crusader of the oppressed and the exploited. His death brought as sense of grief and admiration even from people with no Marxist sympathies. He represented those that could not defend themselves against the interests of corporate terrorism. Their struggle became his struggle for he symbolized what a true revolutionary was. He was colorful, exciting, controversial and believed in his cause one hundred percent.

He was very studious even as a teenager with a voracity for books and writing. He explored deeply the concepts of social thought and consulted the works of Benito Mussolini on Fascism, Josef Stalin on Marxism, Alfredo Palacios, the flamboyant Argentine Socialist, Zola for a critical definition of Christianity, and Jack London for a Marxist description of social class. He even studied Lenin, a personality who lived, breathed and slept revolution.

He later trained as a medical doctor showing that he had a capacity and desire for learning. Later he would meet up with Fidel Castro in Mexico, fighting a CIA, American-backed dictatorship under General Fulgencio Batista of Cuba. At that time, American mobsters and corporate terrorists ran Cuba. With an 80% illiteracy rate, with gangsters, casinos, drugs and prostitution running rampant no wonder millions of Americans used to called the island, the Paradise of Sin.

However eventually all evil comes to an end and that only comes by revolution. Che, Fidel and a group of trained rebel fighters eventually left Mexico by ship. Though they almost lost all their lives because of being ambushed they went through their baptism of fire to bring the Batista dictatorship to an end. They forced out the corporate terrorists and gave the mobsters forty-eight hours to leave the country, setting up the first free socialist democracy in the free world.

Despite all of the success Che the revolutionary fighter and defender of those in chains travelled to the U.S., Russia, China, Vietnam and later to Africa and Boliva were he died because of CIA trained Bolivian soldiers. Whether you agree with his methods or not Che was a born leader and revolutionary, determined to change the world into a more democratic society. Even today rebel fighters throughout Latin America and in Africa admire this great charismatic revolutionary.

Though a great tactical fighter I admire his writings and books even more for he was a great writer and contributed to history as a whole. He will certainly be admired as a symbol for courage, freedom and honor throughout the world. Long live the memory and goals of Che Guevara.
