Nov. 28, 2004 What has been coined as the biggest shopping day of the year; the day after thanksgiving can be quite an event depending on one’s experiences of course. So one year, when my curiosity could no longer bear to be patient, I asked a friend if she would venture out with me to see if I could enjoy participating in such a shopping event. So with my friend warning that I may not enjoy the experience due to the large crowds at the various malls and outlet stores, we headed out. Before arriving at the first mall of our choosing, I was surprised to see how many shoppers were already there before us, for the mall’s parking lot was full, and as we drove around, looking for a particular spot to park the vehicle, I began to wonder, was my friend right about my enjoyment level of this experience? Not wishing to be an early quitter, we made our way to the mall’s entrance only to discover that along the way to shops within, there were crowds en masse so much that we had to slow down our quick walking pace considerably. Once we were inside one of the stores, we soon discovered that it was crowded too, so much so that, for me, it made the shopping experience one in which I could not focus on one object long enough to want to purchase it, for there were other shoppers all around, crowding the same space you were trying to occupy. After venturing into a couple more crowded stores and leaving them to head back out onto the busy walkway, my friend again admonished that the rest of the stores would be just as congested for the remainder of the day. Being the understanding friend she was, she then asked me if I would rather leave and perhaps return some other day. Instantly a smile of relief flashed across my face and we left for home. Later that evening as I was watching the local news, I saw that some shoppers really take the day after thanksgiving seriously. To the point of being in line outside some of those stores since three am while waiting for the doors to be opened at six am, an entire three hour wait. In addition, to make these shoppers’ experience more enjoyable, some of these store owners even gave a prize to the first shopper in line. Shopping can be quite an enjoyable occurrence the day after thanksgiving especially if you, the shopper find the experience to be pleasant, but for now I think I will stay at home the Friday after thanksgiving, for not wanting to be mauled at the mall. (Pun Intended.) Then again there's now online shopping. ------------ About the author Judy Ramsook: My first book titled: "Karen's Adventure" which is about two young girls who go in search of their missing parents, is now available.
