Nov. 28, 2004 Was reading the magazine “Leaves,” Sept-Oct 2004 Issue, there will be a new issue out in January and February, so the Editor wrote me back and informed me: Vasudev Murthy, whom is the Publisher as well. The Magazine is a top notch, one of the best I’ve seen in a long time. It out does most of the writing magazines at the books stores, and explains the dimensions of poetry, and the angles a poet uses. Very well informed staff; there are 60-pages to the magazine, $5.00. There is a section on “Letters,” in the magazine. And one of the great things about this is the editor reviews fiction and poetry from around the world, from its home base in India, to: Australia, to the Philippines, Korea and onto the USA and Europe and South America, to include Israel. So you get a cross-cultural view of how one sees things (for do we not all live an a diverse cultural world); many minds and many eyes. There is an article in the last issue called “The Frog in the Mailbox.” By David Ritchie (Seoul, Korea) and “The Cry,” by R. Vijayaraghavan (from Kolar, India, who has many books to his credit). And the Editor’s “What the Raags told me,” a book by Vasudev Murthy. Also there is a good Editorial on Poetry by Prof. K. Srilata of the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India, who does a great job. The Professor quotes some of the great poets I’ve admired in my life time: like Dylan Thomas, and Plath, along with Emily Dickinson, saying: “A good poem [s] presupposes a special sensitivity to language,” how true that statement is, adding, “to each word.” Yes, often times in poetry, each word is a 1000-in prose, and put together tells a story via, emotions, it is why the bible is written in two languages, half in prose, the other half in poetry. And the professor adds, and again I agree 100%, “The best poems cannot be paraphrased,” true, true, so true.
