Nov. 28, 2004 Much has been made about the fact that George W. Bush won reelection to the White House based on a platform of moral values. Read another way, Bush’s values are the wholesome Christian values that the Bible preaches on. Bush’s win has been declared a win for Christians in this country of ours, because he has not been shy about sharing his faith and he has been steadfast in his stands on what’s right and what’s wrong. And to read all the comments I’ve read about him in recent months, he has about as many disciples as Jesus Christ himself does. Among all this celebration for Bush’s triumph, though, has been lost one very sobering and salient point. What defines a true Christian? In the United States, the word “Christian” is thrown around about as freely as the words “friend” and “love”. By the loose definition, a Christian is one who believes in God, commonly in one of two of the Trinity forms— as Jesus Christ, the son, or as the Holy Father of Jesus—or claims to adhere to the tenets of a certain denomination. While that basic belief is the cornerstone of the Christian faith, there is a much stricter standard to being a Christian. If anyone claims to be a true Christian, a true follower of the tenets set forth in the Bible and believer in Christ’s redemption of man, there are three C’s that he or she must meet, in the order specified below. 1. Conviction of your sinful nature by God. 2. Confession of your sinful nature before God. 3. Commitment to living a life that glorifies God. Anyone who is currently living the Christian life to the fullest extent possible will understand all of this, and should be able to give instruction on it, in their own way. But having brought these words to the forefront, I am compelled to go in depth with what exactly these words mean. Over the coming days, I will do just that. The overall objective of this series is not to help you, the reader, figure out if your neighbor, your colleague at work, or the person that sits three pews ahead of you every Sunday is a Christian. You will have your thoughts about various people and how you think they stand, but only God knows for sure, and it’s best left for Him to judge. Rather, this series is to help you determine whether or not you are entitled to be called a Christian, and if you’re not, what you must do to claim that distinction. ------------ About the author: If there's any one thing that Claxton Graham likes about George W. Bush, it is his ability to mangle the English language, as evidenced by Bush's multiple appearances in "The Stupidest Things Ever Said" calendars. When not raising a fuss about the President, Claxton works as a business systems analyst.
