Nov. 27, 2004 I was channel surfing the other day when a commercial about an electric jar opener caught my attention. Now you can pry open those hard to crack spaghetti jars and such with the aid of a plug in device, especially if your own body strength is not up to the task on any given day. Sometimes I have seen other people and friends agonize themselves over the opening of certain jars to the point of engaging in various antics such as knocking the cover end of the bottle against the kitchen counter, and even prying the lid open with the use of a cutlery item. Then with the aid of a rag, they would proceed to try and twist open the jar, sometimes to no avail while uttering a few choice words. When my own physical strength was not as sound as it is today, I admit I had trouble opening those spaghetti jars as well. Sometimes, out of sheer embarrassment, I would briefly hide the palm of my sore hand if someone happened to enter the kitchen when I was attempting to open a particular bottle. A bottle I would stare at as if hoping that somehow, the cap would become loose enough for me to just snap open. Then I heard that if you placed the bottle with the cap directly under some hot running water, the heat from the liquid would eventually loosen up said jar cover. Of course I tried that too, with the aid of a rag this time to save my hand from becoming any more red, and eventually the cover did snap, breaking the seal and voila, the jar was opened. I no longer cringe when I reach in the pantry for the spaghetti jar, and I think I will consider adding the jar opening device to my counter just in case I ever need it, where all the other small appliances are: the electric can opener, knife sharpener, and the old standby, the toaster. For I once heard someone eloquently say, ‘life is hard, why make it harder.’ So if there is a device that can aid us in our daily chores, why not give it a try, since some of those jars do put your strength to the test at times. ------------ About the author Judy Ramsook: My first book titled: "Karen's Adventure" which is about two young girls who go in search of their missing parents, is now available.
