Nov. 26, 2004 I really have to commend the various advertising agencies for skillfully using ‘drama’ in some of their commercials. For, if one pays careful attention, some of these ads appear more like thirty second mini movies. For they come equipped with all the necessary requirements; a beginning, a middle and an ending. Take for example the latest ‘Nikon’ commercial. It begins with a rhinoceros that has made a successful zoo escape and is running amok in a residential area, when an elderly lady steps out of her home and says: ‘Shoot it,' to a man with such a camera. Then soon after, there emerges the guy with what looks like a highly advanced ‘Nikon’ digital camera, who takes one picture after another, capturing the creature in motion, all this being done while the narrator makes his pitch about the features of the ‘Nikon’ camera. At the end of it all, we, the viewers are taken back to the elderly lady who then asks the accomplished photographer whether he got the picture and he replies: ‘I never miss,’ after which he gives the lady a smirked ridden tap on her shoulder, while the lady continues to look at him in amazement as he walks away. Also, earlier this year while watching the Superbowl, I was taken in by the way in which the ad agency went about the ‘Coca Cola-Pepsi’ dilemna, when they showed a young ‘Jimmy Hendrix’ pondering which soda he should indulge in. On one side of the street there is a ‘Coca Cola’ vending machine and on the other there is a ‘Pepsi’ machine with a guitar shop close by, of course. So which one does ‘Jimmy Hendrix’ opt for, the one which the guitar shop is close to certainly. I could go on and on with other examples, but I think you get the idea. With this type of talent in the minds of the advertising gurus we, ourselves will continue to be dazzled by the occasional commercial that captures our attention, until the next wave. ------------ About the author Judy Ramsook: My first book titled: "Karen's Adventure" which is about two young girls who go in search of their missing parents, is now available.
