Nov. 26, 2004 The big word in virtually any industry you look at today is “intangibles.” Intangibles are adding value to just about everything. Kmart and Sears were merged in an $11 billion deal and the combined value went up – due to the value of intangibles of synergies, and the intangible value of the mastermind behind it, Edward Lampert. Mr. Lampert is being touted as the new “Warren Buffet” and the financial press said that investors were paying a premium for Mr. Lambert’s involvement. That’s an intangible – its value in the mix, but you can’t really put your hands on it. Intangible value also has effect in Hollywood. A movie is more or less likely to sell to the public based not only on the story, but also on the stars. The ability to sign certain star actors adds (or subtracts) from the potential selling ability of any given film. The stars have built their reputation on certain intangibles. There are the “everyman” actors such as Gene Hackman and now Tom Hanks. There are the tough guys, such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, etc. Mr. Willis, however, may have recently depleted his stock as a tough guy. How did his intangible value take a potential cut? Bruce has filed a negligence lawsuit against Revolution Studios for injuries he sustained in filming “Tears of the Sun” a couple of years ago. Mr. Willis’ lawsuit claims that he has endured “extreme mental, physical and emotional pain and suffering” due to the effects of squib gone awry (a pyro explosion designed to look like a bullet’s impact). No doubt Mr. Willis has a solid reason for after Revolution Studios, but we wonder whether or not he has considered the effect of the actions on his reputation as a tough guy. Most likely the lawsuit may have some impact on his marketability in the rough and tumble genre that his Die Hard movies fall into. After all, if the hero gets shut down from a fake bullet, there’s no telling what the impact of having to duck and dodge real bullets would have. It will be interesting to see how the movie studios position Mr. Willis in future movie roles. ------------ About the author: Dwayne Hines currently has 12 books selling in major bookstores and writes for major magazines such as Physical and FitnessRX.
