Nov. 26, 2004 Since Thanksgiving is now past, and I didn't write an article before the holiday I thought I would talk about it now. Most Americans don't have a good understanding of history, a tragic truth, but a truth nonetheless. In this day and age Pilgrims and Puritans are held in the same view as Nazis, and todays conservatives. After all according to the latest election myth it was a bunch of bible thumping fundamentalists, mysogynistic, intolerant, irrational, that reelected George W. Bush. In short it was the second coming of the Puritans. The truth is something else. More than a group of dead white men they founded this country. Which is what leftists can't stand. Left wing comediann Greg Proops once wined during his so called stand up " why did it have to be the Puritans?" he wanted someone like the Italians or the French to have been the dominant force in America. Let's look at the Puritans. Refugees from Europe seeking to practice their faith in peace. They founded many colonies, some were strictly puritan others were founded by dissedents, like Rhode Island. Another sin the puritans will never be forgiven of, besides their piety, is their economic practices. They put capitalism into use before Adam Smith ever wrote his book. They abandoned their communal attempts and went down the road of private property. What else? Oh yes. The puritans were supposed to be dimwits.They were supposed to be capable of doing only what there preachers told them, and the preachers were supposed to be capable of only reading the bible. Ever hear of Harvard? Yale? Just two of the many schools founded by the evil stupid puritans. After all it was Purtian New England that had schools for all their children. Winthrop,Mather, Edwards all great Americans all puritans(sadly Edwards will only be remembered for his "sinners in the hands of an angry God" sermon). America is a great nation because the puritans founded it, and it continues to be great because their traditions live on. Think of the secular, socialist nations of Europe. All in decline. Their polulations are shrinking, the economies are stagnant, God is considered a swear word, and believers looked upon as enemies of civilization. Europe won't even recognize it's own Christian roots. Some would say they have turned their back on God, and they see the consequences. I don't know about that, but it is clear that Europe is not going in the right direction. We say "God bless America" without embarrasment, well most of us. So I am thankful that it was the puritans who got here, crammed aboard a small ship, so they could worship freely.
