Nov. 26, 2004 Stan Grimes: “Christianity: Is It Self-Destructing?” Useless-Knowledge.com, Nov.21, 2004 asks: “Did Christians make up their minds hundreds of years ago (actually thousands) to self-destruct?” Then he answers himself with: “It seems quite possible to me.” The day Jesus began his personal ministry, his own home town tried to kill him. (Luke 4:28) Christianity has been on a path that no other faith can walk. Christianity, which should not have survived past the crucifixion, not only survived, but thrived. That is the history of Faith in Christ; that of survival. Mr. Grimes talks of “charismatic leaders” like the Roman Caesars, or Hitler or Mohammad; and yes, those dictatorial crackpots did start wars that destroyed millions. Let me take a look at my “charismatic leader” for a moment. Nope, I don’t see anywhere where my Lord killed anyone, ordered anyone destroyed or advocated jihad. Let’s see…”Love thy neighbor as thyself…” Gee! That’s a really inciting statement to make! That one will start a war every time; you think? People vote their moral conscience and atheists have a cow; declaring the world is coming to an end! The history of Abraham and his bargain with God over the destruction of Sodom is a good example of the tolerance of the Living God. God told Abraham: “That’s it, Abe. That city is toast!” (My paraphrase) But Abraham bargained with God not to destroy Sodom if he found 50 righteous people there. God agreed. Abraham bargained God down to 10 righteous souls. God still agreed. God did not find 10 righteous souls and you all know the rest of the story. (Genesis 18: 22-32) Peter wrote: “But do not forget this one thing dear friends. With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years is like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:8-9) God always uses destruction of evil as a last resort. Before he kills he tries to heal. He preaches through the efforts of the righteous hoping there will be more “ears to hear” the message of the Gospel. This is an effort at “construction”; not “self-destruction”. Humanity has no clue how tolerant God is being with them. Christians know. Christians know what they’ve been saved out of. They also know that the wrath of God, which is just as real as his love, can be staved off just a little longer if morality and justice continues to survive against atheism and immorality. Our “charismatic leader” demands we turn our cheek and pray for those who despitefully use and abuse us. He tells us not to take up the sword. There will be a time for that. The Caesars, Hitler, Stalin, Hussein, Milosevic, Mohammad and all the great killers of men, killed in their own names; the names of men. They did not know the True God of Heaven or they would not have killed. There was no true love in any of those men. The only real “charismatic leader” with the only meaningful message of peace is Jesus Christ, the Son of God and God the Son.
