Nov. 26, 2004 Recently, my book, “An Apocalyptic Dream,” was released. The book is graphic in regards to the violence, language, and other material. The book also has elements of faith and belief in God. Technically, you have both vices and virtues wrapped in one book. However, in order to read the book, you have to be an open-minded person; in other words, you have to let down your wool over your eyes people call, Christian ethics. As a person who does believe in faith, Jesus, God, etc, I wrote the story knowing what is right and what is wrong, what is evil and what is good. But, it just seems that some people, Christians, just can’t let go of their beliefs as if it was some security blanket, not even to enjoy a piece of literature or movie. I know a particular Christian that I thought was an open- minded person; however, I was to realize that this Christian is no different than Jerry Falwell. I knew this Christian for almost a year, and this Christian seemed like a legit person, almost like a mentor. I knew I was ready to tell this person my book. I told this person the contents of the book in an email, and I received a reply that was more like a school teacher’s lecture of blasphemy. I was told that this person couldn’t handle graphic violent and strong language, which I can understand, it’s obvious this book is not for everybody; however, this person continued with his lecture. This person claims that he/she is “concerned” that the “evil” thoughts that I put in my book do not have a negative influence on me. How would you know what “evil” is if you don’t see it? How do you know to do good if you don’t know what evil is too? I was puzzled about the reply, and in a way excited about it, because I didn’t pull yet tore away the sheep’s clothing from the wolf and reveal the hypocrisy that lies within. This person claims that the reason for he/she not reading the book is because he/she wants to keep “happy thoughts” in his/her mind at all times. Really? How do you explain the young soldiers who see their fellow comrades getting their arms blown off, their legs ripped off, telling others to give their family a message of good-bye. Do you think they just sit back, read their Bible, and think “happy thoughts?” No, they don’t. It is obvious this person has yet to experience the real world; that it is not the happy-go-lucky Christian world where Jesus will save us, country music is played, and the television is riddled with shows like Andy Griffith. I’m sure some people would agree in me saying that prejudice and hypocrisy is still within the Christian ranks. It’s amazing how some people “claim” that just because they go to church that they have to follow every word God says. I’m not suggesting to do evil things, but people should know what evil is capable of doing. Even the Bible has evil within its pages, but it seems this person never mentions that in the scriptures. What about Herod burning the babies? What about the demise of the disciples? Let us not forget Jesus’ story. How come I am the one that gets judged, but Matthew, Luke, and the rest get praised? I hope this person stops his/her patronizing toward me or anyone else for that matter, because only God can sit in judgement of me. I’m not angry at this person as I am disappointed. Disappointed that this minister doesn’t live up to what he/she claims to be. If anything, I would figure this person would be proud that I used my gift to send a message from God. If “bible-beaters” would read my book, they would say it is the work of the evil and that I was somehow possessed by Satan himself. Am I really? Or is it a message no different than what the Bible would put in? What is bizarre is that I was willing to give this book to this person, so buying the book was unnecessary. What else is bizarre is that this same minister mentions pop culture in his/her sermons. Pop icons such as “CSI” a show that shows more blood and guts than the average Jason Voorhees movie, “Saving Private Ryan” which shows violence and strong language, and of course, “Passion of the Christ” which is the torture and demise of Jesus Christ. The problem with some Christian followers is they believe that money is bad, sex is bad, sexual orientation is bad, violence is bad, and to only believe that God will make it all better like a pill. However, just like a placebo, you can give someone what they want without telling them that what you’re experiencing is just fiction. Am I saying that Christianity doesn’t work? No, it obviously works, but it’s sad to see that some people of religion have this robot like quality regarding life; in other words, a person can’t thing for themselves, because the Bible tells them not to. I’m sure if you would ask this person what he/she thought about Gay Marriage, that person wouldn’t have an educated answer; the only answer he/she would say is, “because the Bible says so.” How pathetic. ------------ About the author Eric Schomburg: An Apocalyptic Dream is now out for purchase.
