Nov. 24, 2004 Lena Haddix of Lawton Oklahoma is a 72 year old a great grandmother who has just volunteered for duty in Iraq. Lena has worked for the Post Exchange at Fort Sill Oklahoma since 1977, [the Post Exchange is the Army’s version of Wal-Mart.] Lena has preformed nearly every duty and filled every position at the PX her credentials are unquestionable. Why would someone in their golden years volunteer for such hazardous duty in a combat zone? Lena feels she has an equal obligation to serve her country as any of those young men and women over in Iraq now. Why would the Army allow a senior citizen to take such a risk? It was liberals who made age discrimination illegal. Political correctness demands Lena’s right to go where she feels she’s needed most. Lena has been every bit a soldier since 1977 she feels she has the same rights as her comrades in arms. Lena makes those berating the war in Iraq look a little less patriotic than they did before Lena stepped up to be counted. We read reports from journalists and pundits and even those who have never been closer to the war than their key- board and mouse trying to explain how miserably the war is going and how many lives have been lost. Liberals only count American dead and the civilians they clam are killed by Americans. Liberals never count those killed by the terrorists. Fact is liberals never even recognize there are any terrorists, insurgents, OTI [Other than Iraqis] to them its only Americans on a killing binge. I hate to say there are those I consider Un-American so I’ll just think it. I’ll be challenged for my opinion. How can we call those who continually put down their country Pro-American? They claim their right to decent and they do have that right. With rights go responsibilities, if you don’t like it fix it or shut the hell up. Only three times before has war separated America to this degree. The American Revolution divided the country. Today we celebrate it as our National Holiday. The American Civil War divided the country. Today it’s an important icon of our history. The Vietnam War. Its biggest critic tried wrapping himself in the war using it to win an election for president. The really great heroes always seem to come when the battles are over. So what’s up with Granny? Does she want to be a hero, does she want to set a record of some kind and is she looking to be on Jay Leno’s program. Or is she just being a Patriot who wants to do her part. One thing I can almost guarantee you this information won’t be seen on CBS news tonight. Stories like this never seem to hit the front pages or the evening news. I got it from the internet "apnews.myway.com." My hats off to you Lena, the country can be proud of you. I’m sure it has less to do with your being a woman or being 72. I think it because you’re a tough old broad who knows she can do it, bottom line.
