Nov. 24, 2004 The eagerly anticipated movie "Alexander" and its controversial director Oliver Stone are being threatened with a lawsuit for portraying Alexander the Great as a bisexual. A group of Greek lawyers wants Stone to include a reference in the title credits saying the movie is fiction and not based on fact. Having "Oliver Stone" listed in the credits as director should be enough of a disclaimer. The executive producer of the TV movie "The Day that Reagan Was Shot" and the theatrical release "JFK" is widely known for stretching the truth. You would think that lawyers from Greece, "the birthplace of homosexuality," would be a little bit less homophobic. There is nothing wrong with homosexuality and its not an insult to portray Alexander as a bisexual. Most modern historians think that Alexander was bisexual, if not gay, but what difference does it make? Alexander's great moral failing wasn't that he was a homosexual or a bisexual, it was his bloodlust that propelled him to wage war and kill tens of thousands all to make a name for himself. Neither Stone nor Warner Bros. has commented on the threatened suit, but at the least they should send those homophobic Greek lawyers a thank you note. This publicity is guaranteed to make "Alexander" have a great opening weekend. ------------ About the author Robert Paul Reyes: I am a columnist for the Lynchburg Ledger.
