Monday Night Football And Parenting

By Megan Williams
Nov. 22, 2004

Mr. Eric Schomburg wrote an article regarding my article about my take on Monday Night Football, and the Vibe awards. He also addressed my distaste for rap music and the rap community. Mr. Schomburg makes the claim that my proposal for boycotting rap music is an act of censorship. Well Mr. Schomburg, perhaps you’re right. Maybe it is an act of censorship, but when you have kids then start preaching about your beliefs, okay? Because as a mother, I have to protect my children from the filth that rap music has brought us. I know that back in my day it was Elvis shaking his hips, but that was nothing compared to the garbage kids call music of today.

I would like to know why Mr. Schomburg would agree with rap music when he claims he’s not even a fan of. I think your words are mistaking yourself. Maybe that’s your problem, Mr. Schomburg, is you don’t listen to the words these rappers are saying. Oh wait, you read what Ja-Rule said, didn’t you? Do you agree with what this Ja Rule said about M&M’s daughter? Of course you don’t. You said so yourself, Ja Rule crossed the line. So, what do we do about this? Tell me, Mr. Schomburg, what do you propose we do about such lyrics as this. You said that something should be done, yet you don’t agree with censorship. What do you think people of a higher power should do? Should we cut out what Mr. Rule said? If you agree to this, then you are a hypocrite, because this has to be an act of censorship, right? What shall we do then? You see, Mr. Schomburg, I’m not saying you’re a bad guy, but sometimes censorship is just the right move for acts like these.

I also can’t believe you said that mothers like myself had plenty of time to change the channel before the towel was dropped. Look, the point of the matter is this, I shouldn’t have to change the channel just because someone wants to make a vulgar commercial, I shouldn’t have to. Companies just need to stop thinking that sex sales and then think they will collect money from it. I’m glad you think it’s vulgar too, Mr. Schomburg, but I can’t believe you would say the obvious thing, “just change the channel.” I’m sorry, changing the channel is too much hassle for me.

Finally, you claim that I’m for censorship. Well, I’m not, but I am for tasteful material. I believe anyone can write anything they want. I respect them for that, but do they have to put vulgar language or sexually explicit material in what they have to say? You also say that if we had it my way that we would have never had all the great movies, music, and videogames. My way? How do you know what I want? I said it before, I’m not for censorship, but I believe boycotting rap music would get rid of all the crime and violence that our children see and hear.

I’m not going to degrade you, Mr. Schomburg, but I just think you’re mistaken about how parents think. I’m guessing you’re not a parent, yet. But when you do have kids, I hope you understand that you need to protect them from as much as possible. We’re not balls and chains, Mr. Schomburg, we’re anchors.
