Nov. 21, 2004 I just went to a fantastic movie today! The movie stared Nicholas Cage and was titled "National Treasure." The movie takes a person along many clues to find a treasure but the treasures are inside the movie. First, they feature a 200 year old ship, then a pre-revolution dutch pipe, but the best part was when Nicholas Cage reads a portion of the Declaration of Indenpendance. Goose bumps ran up my arms during the reading. The clues lead to Philadelphia and another scene that lead to more goose bumps, as Nicholas Cage's Charater says, "The last time this document was here was when it was signed." The movie was a good fictional journey through American history. The history was what made the movie great, but the history would not be there if the founding fathers were not unsatisfied with thier current government. The movie showcases several other important historical locations and documents which laid the foundation of both the revolution and the current structure of the United States. From the church where Paul Revere received the famous "one if by land, two if by sea," message to the Silence Dogood letters written by Ben Franklin. It even features a cameo by the Common Sense pamphlet Thomas Paine wrote. The history is there and the United States of America is a great country but for how long? How many voices are silent against the lost rights over the past three years? How many voices are silent about the church starting to take over government? Sometimes I wish the people justifying the patriot acts would read the writings of the original patriots, The Declaration of Independance, Common Sense, or the Bill of Rights, for instance. Once in our history, great men put thoughts of substance down in writing for thier decendants. Today the polititians just write short soundbites for thier supporters to shout at each other at rallies. When will someone in our generation look to the wellfare of our decendants, show the forethought the patriots showed when writing limitations into the constitution of what each part of the government could do. So that even temporarily popular ideas would not impose the tyranny of the majority upon the rights of the minority. ------------ About the author: Being a full time writer is the hardest job that I have tried.
