Monday Night Football And The Vibe Awards Brawl

By Eric Schomburg
Nov. 21, 2004

I read an article on Useless-Knowledge about the Monday Night Football commercial, and the brawl that broke out at the Vibe awards by Ms. Megan Williams. She says in her article, “It just goes to show how such shows such as The Vibe Awards and Monday Night Football shouldn’t even be allowed, period.” What you are promoting is censorship, Ms. Williams. I understand that the commercial may have been vulgar, and it was for prime time television, but what you call “boycotting” is censorship.

Let’s break it down one at a time, shall we? Let’s start with the Vibe awards. The Vibe awards is an awards show that only caters to hip-hop, rap, and r&b music; sorry, no Marilyn Manson here. I’m not a huge fan of either three, but you’re right about one thing, it seems that only award shows like Vibe and Source seem to have fights and brawls within the groups. I don’t know the full details about why a fight broke out at the Vibe awards, so I will not make a claim; however, you would figure that these rap stars would stop “dissing” each other and stop having “beef” with each other. Love the slang. However, what you are suggesting, Ms. Williams, is that we boycott all of rap and hip-hop music? Why? So, mothers like you can rest easier? Like I said, I’m not a fan of rap or hip-hop, but censoring the music, isn’t going to stop violence from occurring.

I recently read an article regarding Ja-Rule and Eminem’s feud with each other. It stated that in one of Ja-Rule’s records that he said something on the lines of “Your mom is a crackwhore, and Kim is a known slut. What do you think Haley’s going to be when she grows up?” Which is obviously a low blow to Eminem. Ms. Williams, I do agree with you on one thing, that something should be done about the rap community, because obviously Ja-Rule was taking a page out of Tupac’s playbook in coming up with rhymes to disrespect someone in the most blunt and explicit way. I would like to know, who was in the studio that day and said, “Yeah, Ja! Talk about a little kid, man. That’s going to sell a lot of records!” That, my friend, is pathetic. If there is one thing I learned about life, is you never disrespect anyone’s family, especially their child. Ja-Rule just crossed that line.

I agree that some of the material may not have been appropriate for kids, but regarding the football commercial, the woman was in a towel long enough for you to change the channel. Do you honestly think that boycotting everything is going to help solve your problems? It won’t. Think about all the great movies, video games, and music we would never have if the boycotting was allowed. The Godfather, Clockwork Orange, Grand Theft Auto, Ozzy Osbourne, and Saving Private Ryan. Isn’t it funny how ABC would promote a raunchy commercial, yet never show Saving Private Ryan?

I am NOT for the boycotting of rap music, because it won’t change anything, people will still get in fights, people will still have sex, and your children will eventually break that ball and chain they call parents. You know what would happen if there was censorship, Ms. Williams? You wouldn’t be able to speak your mind. Think about that.
