Nov. 19, 2004 The message of the moderate Democrats is clear: we are willing to suffer name-calling, taunts, claims that we are the party unfaithful, and much perseverance to get our message out. I am glad to say that, in the two and a half weeks since beginning my New Democratic Plan, I have learned much about the world around me. There is still much work to be done. On Thursday I opened up my G-Mail inbox to see something labeled “NRANews.com.” I figured at first that my Libertarian friend had set me up on their mailing list, and being interested in seeing the mail, I opened it. It was not a newsletter or informational piece signed by a facsimile Charlton Heston. No, it was an invitation to be a guest on the NRANews.com radio show Cam & Company. For anyone who is interested, I will be on Cam & Company on Wednesday, November 24th at or around 3:20pm Eastern Time. The show is officially on Sirius Radio channels Patriot 141 and Right 141, but NRANews.com will have the show archived a day or so later. Either way, it’s going to be interesting. I will be engaging in a friendly conversation about being a moderate Democrat, finding my views at 17-years-old, the Assault Weapons Ban, gun rights and the necessity of the Democratic Party to adjust its sails in order to find victory in 2008. Being pro-gun myself, I think it will be very spirited and I am very, very happy with this opportunity to show listeners that not all Democrats are like John Kerry. This interview provides me with a very unique opportunity to further the Moderate Democratic principles, and to extend a hand to the NRA – which has been vilified by liberal Democrats as being against the best interest of the people – in an attempt to build up from the rubble of 2000 and 2004. Most of all, it will be an enjoyable time, as I have listened to Cam Edwards in the past and find him a most agreeable man. I would also like to take a moment to thank Useless Knowledge for this fine soapbox, where I have spoken since the beginning of this election, for ultimately providing the exposure needed for the kind people at NRANews.com to discover that there are indeed moderate Democrats. It is my greatest hope that much good will come from this interview, and I hope to expand into speaking to people on even more issues. Reforming the Democratic Party to the sensible moderation of the past is not simply the job of Democrats. As Ken Hughes and Brooks A. Mick, two very sensible and knowledgeable conservatives have proven to me, with sensible positions, alliances can be made with what the liberal Democrats seem to think is an inherently evil, oppressive Republican Party. The explosion of The New Democrat is something I am not experienced with, and will now devote much more time to updating my New Democratic Plan as well as my blog. I hope that Democrats, Republicans, Independents, everyone concerned with national politics of any party, will come visit and leave constructive comments. This is the very grassroots that the liberal Democrats speak of but seek to alienate within their own party. For all those who have called me Zell Miller, Arlen Specter, and other names, I feel genuinely sorry. As members of the Democratic Party, we should be able to look beyond small, narrow views and towards the good of the party, the nation, and the people. Hopefully, in time, these lost Democrats will wander back into the movement. ------------ About the author: Max Burns is a 17-year-old Democrat with moderate, centrist ideals.
