John Lennon's "Imagine"

By Richard Anthony
Nov. 17, 2004

Imagine there’s no Heaven,
It’s easy if you try.
No Hell below us,
Above only sky,
Imagine all the people
Living for today…

Imagine there’s no countries,
It isn’t hard to do.
Nothing to kill or die for,
No religion too,
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace…

Imagine no possessions,
I wonder if you can.
No need for greed or hunger,
A Brotherhood of Man,
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world…

You may say I’m a dreamer,
But I’m not the only one.
I hope some day you’ll join us,
And the world will live as One.

- John Lennon

No matter what you think of the man, either cult hero, rock and roll star, infidel, or blasphemer his “Imagine” song has gone down as one of the most powerful and poignant words ever written. These words came out of the turmoil and the confusion of the sixties and are as valid now as they were then.

The world’s history is froth with death, disease, destruction and man’s inhumanity to man. Don’t you think it’s about time that we wake up and really realize what our responsibility to mankind should be? It should not include continuing down the road of destruction and disharmony that the Bush administration and its fanatical followers are pursuing. But should consist of bringing nations, religions, creeds, colors and sexes together to act as one for the benefit of all.

With all the talk of God and religion that seemed to follow the presidential candidates around during the campaign, is it possible that God created this great nation of ours to be betterment to mankind? But instead we have turned His mission around and have bastardized our role in the world. Maybe we have changed what He decreed for us and have fallen prey to those in power that want to keep the world in a status quo. But who, in their right minds, would want that? Who indeed…

What’s the old saying, “It’s better to rule in Hell than serve in Heaven.” Maybe these world leaders, politicians, financiers or whomever they maybe uses this statement as their anthem? Maybe to them keeping us down and in derision without a united cause or believe keeps them in power. A power that they are loathed to relinquish. To them serving in a Hell that we have created with our bigotry and hated of anything that doesn’t fit into our narrow scope of what is, is better than leading us to a new beginning. Because with a new awakening of the human race, we would look around at the old, worn out systems that we had in place and toss them out like last week’s garbage. They would be left on histories dump heap like the Grecian, Roman, and Babylonian empires. Gone and forgotten.

This will not happen to these people who have manipulated and schemed their way to the top. They will not give up their power. Even in death they continue to manipulate by living proxies who believed in them in life. The power died, with the individual, but the system that they created is still kept alive by others who have taken up the mantle and in so doing, continue to keep us downtrodden.

Maybe John Lennon saw beyond these people and their system. Maybe John Lennon looked at Mankind as a whole and realized we are more than our sum parts. Maybe the artist in him knew instinctively that one day some one would look upon his words and dream a dream. And in so dreaming will be able to move a generation, a people, a unified force to move Mankind out of its destructive and counter productive ways into the light. And maybe their mantra will be “You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. I hope some day you’ll join us, and the world will live as One.”
