Russia's New Nuke; Will The Cold War Return?

By Johan Peters
Nov. 17, 2004

Today, I heard the following on Dutch news: President Putin of Russia announced the Russians will produce a new nuclear intercontinental missile from next year. This missile can bridge over a distance of 4,000 kilometres. Enough to hit any target in the USA. Ouch, it seems President Bush´s biggest friend is not such a good friend anymore.

The reason why Russia introduces this new missile is that it must not neglect its nuclear power, according to Mr. Putin. Furthermore, he claims the missile is invisible for any radar protection. So, there goes another pet subject of the Republicans: the expensive shield that has to protect the USA against attacks with nuclear weapons (not that it has shown to be effective during the tests so far).

Will we return to the period we left behind in the eighties, the cold war? The period at which Russia and the USA were threatening each other with their nuclear weapons. Why should President Putin like to do that? Keep in mind, in fact he´s just nothing more than a dictator claiming he leads a democratic and free country. Which isn´t true at all. Which can never become true, because Russia will never give up the idyll of being a superpower and thefore needs a strong hand (so its ex-communist leaders believe). I guess that´s the reason he comes with this announcement at this time. To make it clear, especially to the USA, he should not be underestimated.

What will President Bush do about this? He and President Putin seemed such good friends, but friends sometimes turn out not to be that reliable. I´ve understood the new Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Condoleeza Rize, has always had a great knowledge of and interest in (fighting) communism. This could be her test case to show the world where she stands for as far as striving for peace and a safer world is concerned. Hopefully, she´ll be able to act as tactically as her predecessor Mr. Colin Powell did. Both the USA and Russia have got other things on their mind, the war on terror. It´s up to her to make clear to Mr. Putin he´s going the wrong way without creating another, former, enemy.
