Nov. 14, 2004 As an unpublished author, I attended the New England Crime Bake conference this weekend. What a well run meeting with plenty of useful information for other writers in the same category. The guest of honor was Robert Parker who was wonderful. I even got his autograph on two of his earlier novels. The highlight for me was that I had a chance to give a five minute pitch of my novel to an editor and she seemed to like my description and asked me to send her my manuscript. Keep your fingers crossed. Full of enthusiasm, when I arrived home, I punched the button and fired up the computer and connected with the Mystery Writers of America web site. To my deep sadness, the person who ran the meeting passed away and they were sending me the news. Al Blanchard was the president of the New England Chapter of MWA and ran this meeting with true professionalism. I met Al for the first time yesterday and he struck me as a warm and compassionate man. He showed his humor as he introduced other members yesterday morning. Then today after he spoke he felt ill and asked help to go to his hotel room. When he still felt ill an ambulance was called but Al died on his way to the hospital...they suspect an embulism. I hope they celebrate his legacy in years to come and rename the conference as the Al Blanchard New England Crime Bake. It only goes to show how precious life is and that we should cherish every moment we have. I know I'm heading to the den to give my wife a hug and tell her how much I love her. ------------ About the author: Mike Draper has written a novel, "Splattered Blood" and is in the process of searching for an agent and publisher.
