Nov. 12, 2004 Let me first start off by apologizing to my readers for not putting together a column for the past two weeks. I’m sorry… Now that, that is taken care of, I would like to say that one of the reasons that I didn’t have anything last weeks was due to the national elections. I had to take a few days in order to settle down. Now that they have passed, I can come to you without my initial anger spewing forth. As you can tell by the tremor of my words so far, you know which side I was hoping would win. But they didn’t and America has spoken. Up until last week the world revered our esteemed president as an idiot and at worse a warmonger. Now the world looks on our whole country as idiots and warmongers. But America has spoken, or at least fifty one percent of America has spoken. What does the next four years hold in store
for America and the world? As John Kerry pointed
out…”More of the same.” But America has spoken.
Let me speak to those Americans who voted to keep
Bush in office. You probably have a bumper
sticker that reads “Support Our Troops” proudly
in place on your car. But do you know anybody,
family or friend that is in the military? I’d
venture to guess not. If you do, then you should
prepare yourself for further hardship. Because
when or if we finish in Iraq, Iran is next on the
agenda and if you think, for one minute, that
it’s not then you are deluding yourself. This
president and his regime have been handed a
golden egg by the fifty-oners and they will press
their agenda to the last degree. It doesn’t
matter to them the cost in American lives, money,
or integrity. To them the only thing that matters
is making the world into their image. The attack upon Iraq was not an attack based on a threat. It was a statement, by this administration, that GOD, to make the world safe for democracy and damn anybody else who doesn’t think their way, destined us. Pure and simple. You can’t read into it more than that. If you can, again you’re deluding yourself and those around you because, I’m sure you’re spouting the Republican dogma that you have been programmed into spewing out to those around you. With the hopes that you’ll be able to infect and twist their minds into accepting the new Republican way of thinking. This administration and its collection of supporters are like a host parasite that contaminates those around it without becoming infected itself. Behold the new Typhoid Mary. In the past week I have heard so many people talking about why we need to change the world. “Might makes Right,” they protest. I believe might makes us more responsible to those around us that have no opportunity to influence the world. I explain to my sons that actions always influences. But which way our are actions influencing? Now, more than ever, the world is in trepidation at what America will do next. We lied to them as Secretary Powell addressed the United Nations, in front of the world’s cameras to justify our incursion into Iraq. We thumbed our noses at them when we said we would go in whether they were by our side or not. When in recent history have we treated the world so shabbily? We couldn’t do it when the USSR was around because we needed them. Now that the USSR is defunct, I guess the need for world allies and friends are other things that are defunct as well. We are the only big boy on the world’s playground and with this administration we have gone from the boy next door to the loathsome, hated bully. But America has spoken. I’m going to make a few predictions and I hope I’ll be terribly wrong. The first one you already know, we will invade Iran next. It’s so close, why not? The next prediction is that when we do this or maybe before we do, the Selective Service act will be reinstated. The demands on our military already are strained to the breaking point. Nobody in their right mind is going to volunteer when they’re looking at coming home in a body bag. Oh yes, the companies that produce body bags will have an enormous growth, so buy stock. If you have children or teenagers and voted for Bush, great job! And remember it was your vote in the southern states and Ohio that cost you your son or daughter. My last prediction is this, when the draft comes back, the 18 – 24’s who didn’t vote this time and brought this upon themselves will probably wake up and smell the napalm. And maybe with this awakening of the possible draftees of the Republican war, the sixties could be upon us again. And with that first whiff will come the realization that they’ll have their chance to lay down their life for the Republicans. It won’t be for their country, nor for home security, and not for their younger brothers or sisters but for Bush, Rove and all the rest of this administration. Most of us that went through the sixties have a tendency to glorify those times to our kids. But what I remember was a violent and troubled time that nearly tore our nation apart. There was so much civil unrest that if it wasn’t for the big, red menace we could have had another civil war. But we got through, barely. Could we dodge the bullet again? Bush and his cronies have brought us back in time to the Dark Ages, where it was the Christians against the Muslims, and we all know how that one turned out. But America has spoken and the word coming out of its mouth is “Bah, bah.” My dictionary describes the word “sheep” as a weak, timid or stupid person. Which is an apt description of at least 51% of our voting population. I don’t know if they have broken down the vote
as to age and gender by this time, but I’ll
research it and next week’s column will be about
that. I don’t think that I’ll be surprised to
find out that the sheep that voted for Bush comes
from the elderly, the poor and the jobless. So
when I find those facts to be true, I’ll be more
than convinced that whatever this administration
will do to the country in the next four years….we
will have deserved it.
In 1998 and 1999 Mr. Anthony’s poem “What is Winning All About?” was selected by the International Library of Poetry to be placed in their anthology book of American poets for 1998. They contacted him again the following year to seek his permission for “Winning” to be included in their Millennium anthology collection. He, of course, gladly gave it. You can access his webpage at
