Oprah Winfrey On Men

By Brian E. Scott Sr.
May 31, 2005

While waiting in the checkout line at the local grocery, I happened to glance at the headlines of the various magazines as I usually do while passing the time. There are the usual stories in the Enquirer and such periodicals such as those devoted to Brad and Angelina, Ben and Jen, Wacko-Jacko and the like. On the cover of “Weekly World News”, I find the most entertaining of all. There are the stories of “Bat boy found under house in Massachusetts“, and other totally obnoxious but humorous stories as well. Most times, I simply chuckle at the silliness, continue in the line, pay the ridiculous prices for my groceries, and go about my business.

Today though, I glanced at the “O” magazine, which is the brainchild of Oprah Winfrey. One of the headlines was; “This will change forever the way you look at men”. I didn’t take the magazine off the rack to read. I already knew what the substance of the article was. Most likely, the article was trying to focus on the supposed weaknesses of being a man and other subtle bashes to masculinity. Probably there were advices to women of how to cope with the “little boy” that they may have in their lives. Probably something about trying not to hurt a man’s fragile ego or some other “bravo sierra” like that. The magazine was not worth the energy to lift it off the rack and open the pages.

I like Oprah; I think that she is a good person and has done many things to help others. She is one of the biggest humanitarians that I can think of. She has also been the launching pad for many a talent. Although it is much overlooked, several dieticians, authors, designers, and even psychologists such as Dr. Phil received their big break due to Oprah Winfrey. What I do not believe is that Oprah knows anything about men. It does not matter what her male-bashing female experts have told her for insertion into her magazine. Now of course her dumb audience will eat up every word.

The proof of Oprah not knowing anything about men is her choice of men, and her lack of a normal relationship history. The proving point of my statement in recent years is her “boyfriend”, the tall-headed gigolo, Stedman Graham. Mr. Graham has nothing to offer and pales in comparison next to Oprah. Everyone knows what he is in her life for. That is, anyone who has the knowledge comparable or greater than that of a ten year old child. What Oprah sees in this man, I do not know. His face is literally in the bottom half of his head. I have never seen such a tall head, outside of the comics. As I said, he has nothing, and would not have even been able to have the sorry book that he supposedly authored, “You Can Make It Happen” published if it were not for being associated with Oprah.

I will make an educated guess that because Oprah has not had a real relationship with a man that she probably has real issues that she has never addressed. I have heard about the alleged rape when she was just a girl. If this rape did indeed happen, it is extremely unfortunate. No one should have to go through that, especially a young child. However, if it did happen, that would explain her unfruitful relationship(s) and the slant towards male bashing on her show. There is never a situation where the woman is at fault on any of her shows. As an aside, I only watch her show if my mother or girlfriend has control of the television; I am not one of her regular viewers. Now as I was saying, the ‘evil doer’ is always male. This is the side of Oprah that I do not care for. On her show, she is almost as biased as the Liberal King, Phil Donahue once was. What Oprah and others are doing is a disservice and only causes more of a rift between men and women. As long as the male is perceived in society, due to a concentrated effort by some, as the sole dysfunctional one of a relationship, the hostility will grow between men and women.

The horrible headlines that we are faced with almost on a daily basis of men killing and beating women in some cases, I am sure are attributed to this biased attitude toward males in society. This is not an excuse for violence. I am only pointing this out because all men are not at the same intelligence or level of self-control.

As many can attest to, there are the stories of biased attitudes in divorce court, in custody cases, in social services, in some “rape” cases, and in some domestic violence allegations. There has to be fairness or hostility will only grow. For the dummies that only see things in black and white, all cases are individual. I am not saying the reverse of the point of this article; that men are being shafted. What I am saying that many in society do not realize, thanks to the Oprah Winfrey’s and Phil Donahue’s of the world, is that there is good and bad in everyone. There are good men and bad men. There are good women and bad women. Not all men are bad. Not all women are good. I have known and heard of, lazy women who do not lift a hand to help cook, take proper care of their children or help clean the house. Many times the women who have approached me for relationships were married. It is not important whether I did anything with these women that did; that is not anyone’s business. Some were even married to, or dating friends of mine. You see, there are good women, and bad women. I have known men that took care of their kids, cleaned the house and paid the bills. All of this was done while knowing that their woman was sleeping around and doing whatever she pleased. Because of the biasness in how it is perceived of how men and women conduct their lives though, some lowly women like the one described would be able to take a man for everything in a divorce case. In addition, I say to take away more ammunition from some people with tunnel vision; I have not been taken to the cleaners in a divorce case.

Therefore, beside a gripe that I have, my hat is off to Oprah for her humanitarian efforts. She as I said is basically a good person. Everyone has there faults however. Oprah shows her fault in posturing herself as an authority on men.
