May 30, 2005 It's Memorial Day, lets go shopping, the stores have sales! Who was the genius behind the Memorial Day sales? This holiday is a holiday of remembering those who we have lost. When did it turn out to be a big shopping holiday. Every year, about a week before Memorial Day, I post a sign that we will be closing on that day. The reaction I get from some of my customers is, "Why?" "It's not a big holiday, you should be open so we can shop" These people, the majority of them are fine people, yet ignorant and lackng common sense, do not understand the meaning of Memorial Day, or they just don't care. In the old days, I'm only forty-one, but I can remember the old days, there weren't any stores open. Our family went to parades, to the graves of our family and friends, cook outs, to my best friend's house, and we had fun. I don't remember anyone mentioning we had to go to Wal-mart. Things have changed, but in my honest opinion, not for the better. As I write this article, on Memorial Day 2005, we've had, here in the Boston area, at least seven deaths, attributed to drinking and driving. It happens every year. Why must you drink to excess to celebrate the holiday? We should mourn the loved ones we lost in the past, but now, we must, next year, mourn those of you who we lost, this year celebrating the losses of the past. Confused? Read it again. You know I'm right. To all our readers
at UK Mag, please say a prayer for those who we have lost. Remember our
Military, who keep us safe from foreign enemies. Our Police and Fire
and
EMS who come to our aid, everyday. Our elected officials. And our
families. Please enjoy this holiday the way it was intended. You can go
shopping anytime.
