May 29, 2005 As Yogi Berra said, “It’s déjà vu all over again!” John Kerry had claimed that either “all his military records are posted on his web site” or that “I will sign a Form 1080 and release my records.” Neither claim was true, as he had never posted all his records nor signed a release. Once again, on the Tim Russert TV show, he pledged that he would sign the 1080 Form which authorizesing the Defense Department to release his military records. But that was 110 days ago. And the word is out that now, finally, he has signed that document. There are two stories circulating right now. The first is that Sen. John Kerry has his hands on the documents are that he and his staff are “going over them.” Another version is that it may take a “couple of months” before the Navy sends this form on to the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis, Missouri. Given past experience with Kerry, neither story may be true. Some conservative web sites have said that the documents, once released, will “either prove or disprove the claims (of) the Swift Boat veterans…” I wish it were that easy. The documents may prove the claims or disprove them, or there may still be enough uncertainty that we will never have 100% proof. And it may be that somewhere along the line, a powerful senator may have enough influence that the records get sanitized, parts lost, etc. If all else fails, they can fall back on the old story about the “fire” at the personnel center which “may have destroyed the records.” The personnel center is notorious for pulling this old excuse out of their hat whenever they don’t want to take the time to dig up an old record. I have serious doubts that the matter will be settled. For my part, however, the claims by Kerry and the NY Times and other leftist media that the Swiftvets were politically motivated seems to ring hollow. Listening to the stories of those guys, they rang true as people who simply found Kerry’s behavior, both during the war and afterward, so egregiously anti-American and dishonest that they found him “Unfit for Command.” ------------ About the author Brooks A.
