May 28, 2005 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Since then every living being that has walked or crawled on this planet has looked up at night and tried to figure out just how it all started. So, I decided to write a short story from an angel's point of view. We'll call him Michael. Now Michael lived in a place called heaven by earthlings, but he just called it home. He lived in a world surrounded by colours and sounds no human saw or heard while alive. Today, however there is a buzz in the air. Whispers circulating tell that God wants to create a new world, a new universe. What's wrong with this one Michael thinks. Yet he shivers in anticipation. Trumpets and angel organic music swell to announce that God is ready to begin. Michael looks out past the edge of his universe and sees: nothing. No darkness, no vacuum, just nothing. Why is God doing this, Michael wonders. God turns and answers his unasked question. Because I want to create something that will choose to worship me. I want to create living creatures whose lives can resound with joy, praise and light. The motivation to create God informs Michael, is love. God turns and stretches His hand towards nothing and speaks words Michael understands yet cannot comprehend. "Let there be light!" Every face stares at the expanse of nothing. Waiting, watching. Then they feel the powerful force of God's energy reaching out towards nothing and... Einstein stated that E=mc². God's energy moved at light speed, even faster perhaps and mass began appearing. As God's unlimited energy poured into nothing, something began. Creation! Hydrogen, helium, carbon, nitrogen, sulphur, all formed with millions of other elements as God's energy produced mass. Elements began to merge and create new elements which released new sources of energy. Faster and faster until the mass itself introduced a new element: gravity. Michael had never heard of this before. What was gravity? He soon found out as the force of gravity reached out to mass around it and drew it towards other creations of mass. Collisions took place and the first star was born. When God allowed His hand to fall by His side, the billions of collisions and the creation of new elements produced all the energy needed to sustain the light God had spoken into existence, from nothing. Michael swung his head this way and that way as he watched new stars burst into existence. Soon the stars raced away into the darkness of nothing, kept form falling by the word of His power. Michael watched spellbound as a new universe came into being! Of course, time here had no meaning. Michael never aged and time never passed. Michael never tried to figure out how long it took God to create this new amazing universe. It seemed to materialise before his eyes even as the words of God exited His mouth and yet it seemed to take forever. Time never existed in Michael's dimension. Yet, in this new universe, Michael could see that God had limited the physical universe to only four dimensions. That meant that whatever God created would...age! Then God reached out His hand and did something wonderful. He set the whole new universe in motion and it spun around God at its centre. Spinning and expanding, God's creation would be like Him and have no end. Looking hard, Michael saw that it would be difficult to see the beginning as well. Wow! Just like God Himself! In an instant and over a timeless eternity, God created more. Plants, animals, fish, oceans, rivers. Astounded, Michael stood open-mouthed as God created man. This is my finest creation, said God. Michael looked at the galaxies and wondered how this tiny carbon and water creation could be God's highest. Then He saw God reach into Himself and place His life within man. The beings eyes popped open and man breathed his first breath. Inside man, Michael saw the light of God burning as bright as God Himself. Wow! Man looked at God and God looked at man. The man stood, reached out his hands to God and chose to worship and love Him. For the first time ever, Michael witnessed God weeping for joy! Man had chosen to love Him. The free will that God had given man worked to return glory and praise back to God. Behind God, Michael watched new galaxies exploding into existence, all because of those four little words: "Let there be light!" God watched as early man hunted for food and when he had eaten, he looked up at the zillions of stars and wondered. Later God watched as learn'd man chose to defy God, turning light into darkness and proclaiming darkness as light. Yet still, God smiled when even these men of darkened heart looked up at the stars at night and wondered. One day, thought God, one day I will show you where you came from. Last night, the stars were beautiful above me. I looked at them and wondered and God smiled! ------------ About the author: Ian Campbell is the author of the novel "The Fifth Cylinder."
