May 27, 2005 I am not ignorant nor a fool. When I started writing for Useless Knowledge, I knew that some of my columns would touch a nerve of someone reading my words and thoughts. After all, most of my columns are MY opinions and my outlook on life. I never expected everyone to agree with me 100% of the time. But one column I wrote really has gotten me slammed, both in my in-box and on my message board on my web-site and I’ve taken the people bashing me for what I have written with a thick skin. Especially the person on my message board who decided to take his/her opinion there and somehow twist my words into something horrible and tried to compare my column to something that happened to two unfortunate 7 year old children in Canada. The Column? “Teens And Respect: Where Has It Gone?” The argument on my message board? That I am unwittingly promoting child spanking pornography! This person quoted some article out of a Montréal newspaper about unruly 7 year olds that had corporal punishment handed to them by the principal of their school and when the principal was investigated, he was found to have child spanking pornography in his home. Now I ask what does that have to do with the lack of respect that some teenagers have for authority in today’s society? I wrote that article after my daughter had a) refused to stop seeing a boy that was a known drug abuser, b) stayed out all night one Saturday after giving us a phone number with one digit off and the address, but she claims that if we cared, we would have called, I told her the phone lines run both ways, c) friends of hers tried to pop the lock on our liquor cabinet and I threw them out of our home causing another argument with our teen, and d) I found marijuana cigarettes in her room along with used condoms. That was the jest of the column. Since writing that column, I have found out that yes indeed, a parent can open hand spank their own child (as long as no foreign objects are used) if the parent deems that the punishment fits the disobedience of the child in question until that child reaches the age of majority of 18. Never once in the original column did I mention anything about anyone UNDER the age of 13, nor did I imply anything or unwittingly promote child pornography. In fact, child pornography of ANY kind makes me SICK TO MY STOMACH. As the mother of three lovely and beautiful children, and my oldest doesn’t look like she’s 15, she looks older, I am aware that these children of mine can be prey to child molesters and monsters of all sorts that now days are frequenting the internet more and more. Even child killers make me mad. I think they should do to Susan Smith and Andrea Yeates what they did to their children and drown the two of them. Harsh? Yes, I am harsh when it comes to mothers killing their own children and now in a northern suburb of the city I live in, a father killed his own child and her best friend. The reason he gave was they didn’t come home on time. He is released on bail, and the mother of the daughter he killed, TOOK HIM BACK! She even BAILED HIM OUT OF JAIL! If it were me, I would let him rot until trial and testify against him and beg and plead for execution. But I write what I write and I don’t see how a column on teenagers can be misconstrued to include children under the age of 13.
