May 25, 2005 Jennifer Wilbanks has a high-powered lawyer who is adept at explaining her client's irrational and illegal behavior. Her lawyer, Lydia Jackson, admitted that the Runaway Bride bought a bus ticket days before her cross-country marathon from the altar, but instead of admitted that it was part of a premeditated plot, she explained that "it was a safety net". Whatcha talking about Willis? The not-so-blushing bride has a very forgiving fiance who welcomed her back with open arms. He must be mesmerized by his bride's saucer eyes. Most women have boyfriends or husbands who aren't quite so forgiving, they will get interrogated if they arrive home ten minutes late from work. The bug-eyed jogger has a "spiritual adviser" who rationalizes his parishioner's sinful behavior. Instead of calling on her to repent and apologize, he tries to paint her as a victim of stress drowning in overwhelming circumstances. Why is it that every crook and scoundrel now deems it necessary to have a "spiritual adviser" as part of his/her entourage? Soon even serial killers will have a "spiritual adviser" as part of their legal and public relations teams. Bridezilla has psychiatrists who explain away her criminal acts by stating that she has "mental issues." Jennifer Wilbanks doesn't have "mental issues", she has criminal issues that need to be addressed by the criminal justice system. Wilbanks comes from a very affluent family who evidently believes that the criminal antics of the Runaway Bride are merely youthful indiscretions. They have the attitude that the wealthy should be able to get away with murder. But shyster lawyers, shrinks, enabling family members and sleazy spiritual advisers could not save Jennifer Wilbanks from the consequences of her crimes. Today Jennifer Wilbanks was indicted by the Gwinnett County District Attorney on a felony count of making a false statement and a misdemeanor count of making a false report of a crime. I hope that justice prevails and the Runaway Bride cools her heels behind bars -- if only for a few months. ------------ About the author: Robert Paul Reyes is a columnist for the Lynchburg Ledger.
