May 24, 2005 “To whom much is given, much is required.” Despite her billions, you better believe it’s brutal being Oprah! Even with her Angel’s Network, and legendary generosity, she still has more than her share of critics. Many in the black community (myself sometimes included), believe that she shows favoritism to white guests and audience members. And that she often trivializes her tremendous outreach ability by airing shows like “BRA INTERVENTION”, “NATE’S MAKEOVERS”, and KIRSTIE ALLEY’S battle of the bulge. HERE’S A NEWSFLASH OPRAH----- real people with real lives really don’t give a damn! To make matters worse, a few years ago when my poetry group and I authored our first collection of pieces, we proudly presented a copy to her, as a token of esteem. The book was returned with a formatted, impersonal letter stating that the show no longer accepted personal gifts. What a slap in the face! But in May, she made her critics proud---- by honoring the accomplishments of noted black women with a 3-day LEGENDS LUNCHEON. Divas in attendance included some of my favorites: Debbie Allen, Alicia Keys, Maya Angelou and Tina Turner to name a few. What a gallant, gracious, gutsy gesture! In a society that often sees black women as second class citizens, (and competitive and "catty") she recognized and acknowledged the awesome impact we have not just on each other’s lives, but to the artistic enjoyment of many, many generations of people of myriad races and religions. And though she may never read these words, today she became my role model, my “legend”.
