What Is Really Happening On Guantanamo Bay?

By Johan Peters
May 22, 2005

So, the story in Newsweek about profaning the Koran on Guantanamo Bay wasn´t true after all, says Newsweek. Strangely enough, the International Red Cross says it´s true. In fact , the IRC told American government about it already in 2002. Who tells the truth?

What´s really happening on Guantanamo Bay? How many men are still being held captive there? Most prisoners have been on this spot for almost four years. It seems to me one could know by now whether someone is a dangerous terrorist or not. How are they treated anyway? Since nobody is allowed to look and see, they´re not treated according to the Geneva Conventions, that´s for sure. Are they dangerous? We can´t tell, because we don´t hear anything about them.

Lately, I saw Michael Moore´s documentary ´Bowling for Columbine´. One of its main messages is that people in the USA are being kept more afraid for violence, burglary, murder etc. than they statistically seen have to be. I can´t avoid making a link to what´s happening on Guantanamo Bay.

The USA are at war against terrorism. Its cause was legitimate, no doubt about that. But, what is the current state of the war? Is the US army, are US intelligence services, making progress in finding and capturing the bad guys? The Osamas? No news about that whatsoever. The war goes on, so is the captivation of men on Guantanamo Bay. Are they maybe an excuse for US government to show the American public something is at least being done and that they are the reason to remain careful?

It´s likely I will get a lot of comment on this column. Just keep in mind: I´m not anti-American. I admire your country, I get along with Americans very well, also with Americans who don´t share my political point of view. The questions mentioned above just came up to me. I think the world has a right to get the answers.
