May 18, 2005 It seems that the legislators on Capitol Hill never knew what hit them. The August legal surroundings, are usually enough to cow the spirit of the most extrovert politician. However, George Galloway was probably never cowed by anything in his life and he isn't likely to start exploring that activity now. To some extent, you have to admire his sheer guts--or "criminal effrontery" as some people will tell you. George Galloway started small and he has achieved his success (if success you can call it) on the back of an unchanging and extremely didactic socialism or Marxism. He consistently opposed Brritish and American intervention in Iraq and was recently kicked out of the Labor Party for his outspoken views. During the long period of sanctions against Saddam's regime, he was a regular visitor to Baghdad and vociferously supported the cause of lifting sanctions.Since his dismissal from the Labor Party,he has succeeded in giving Prime Minister, Tony Blair,a bloody nose by standing as a parliamentary candidate in London's Bethnal Green--and winning! It should be borne in mind, however, that he chose his target with meticulous care. Bethnal Green has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country--and also one of the highest concentrations of Muslim voters, just crying out to make their dissatisfaction with the Blair government tangible in the form of a maverick politician: enter "Gorgeous George" in the nick of time ( a sobriquet he acquired in parliament due to his numerous affairs). Is George Galloway likely to be guilty of misusing the UN's Oil for Food Program in a criminal way, providing kick backs for Saddam and lining his own pockets in the process? In my opinion this is extremely unlikely. George Galloway, at heart, is an eighteenth century adventurer, a suitable subject for a Robert Louis Stevenson romance: a committed "do-gooder" determined to help the poor and under privileged, by the practice of outdated Marxist economic doctrines--whether they want his help or not! It is possible that he was deceived by the far more ruthless Saddam, who in his heart probably had only contempt for Galloway as an idealistic idiot whose beliefs could be twisted and used to his own advantage. Take a bow, George--and light up another of those big cigars. Americans now know your face and it could be the right moment to make a full time move into show business! ------------ About the author Jon Aristides: Read, 'The Black Scarab of Amun-Ra'.
