May 18, 2005 What exactly is Ozism? Ozism is a relatively new religion finding its roots in the marvelous old movie, “The Wizard of Oz.” Ozists as they call themselves believe that there is no god, in the traditional sense. Their god is a copycat of the Wizard, played by Frank Morgan in the original movie. The genesis of Ozism can be found in Kansas City, Kansas. A very remote area of Kansas City ironically called Munchville hosts the First Church of Oz. What do Ozists believe in? In speaking with their founding father, Joseph Betting, I discovered a remarkable system of beliefs. The basic tenets of Betting’s church are quite simple:
1. A tornado will someday destroy everything in its path between the west coast and the east coast, between Canada and Mexico. Hence, the destruction of America will come in the form of a hurricane or a tornado. Mr. Betting is known by the title of Second Wizard and is given a similar status in the Ozistic Church as Jesus has in the Christian Church. When I asked Second Wizard Betting what lies in the future for his newly found church. He replied, “We are growing at a terrific pace. My wife, Dorothy, and I have full intentions of taking our show on the road. Our opening hymn at each show will be the old Elton John hit, ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.’” I subsequently asked the Second Wizard what significance the song had. He smiled and said, “Elton John is the real Wizard.”
It’s amazing what some people will come up with just to receive press. Of course, CNN hasn’t got a hold on this story yet, but if they do, I can guarantee Mr. Betting will rank right up there with Jennifer Wilbanks, Brittany Spears, and Charlie Brown. I must go now. “I’m off to see the Wizard, the wonderful Wizard of Oz.”
