May 12, 2005 Anyone selling a house in my on my street can now say the neighborhood has rustic charm. We have a rooster living among us. I don’t live in the country, I live in a borough where a pet rooster goes against the ordinance, but at the risk of sounding like a racist, some live fowl is to be expected when a portion of your neighborhood is Hispanic. I don’t understand why anyone with a 20-foot by 30-foot yard would have a rooster. I don’t think they’d taste good off the grill, even with that new Jack Daniels barbeque sauce. I haven’t peeked in their yard to see if they also have a hen house, so I don’t know if they’re running a small chicken business? But the rooster starts crowing around five-thirty in the morning. Maybe he’s more dependable than an alarm clock. The rooster is still pretty young, and his crows aren’t quite perfected, but you have to give the little boy credit¾he practices with great zeal until seven each morning. He’s getting better every day! In a few weeks, he will sound as strong as the rooster on my son’s See-And-Say. The rooster isn’t in my back yard, so he’s not scaring me awake in the morning, but he’s close enough that I can hear him, especially when my windows are open. I wake up smiling each morning. Especially at this point in his life when he’s trying to master at his life’s work. I hope my neighbors don’t get crotchetty and call the borough on my neighbor’s pet. He’s a lot better than the dog across the street that used to bark all night. At least a rooster isn’t nocturnal. Also, anyone who longs to live in the country can close their eyes each morning before getting out of bed, and imagine they’re living on a farm. ------------ About the author: Karyn Hughes has a fiction book published by Authorhouse entitled, Scattered Dreams, which is about a newly single mother who battles ADHD.
