Doom And Gloom, Stock Markets, And "Global Warming"

By Brooks A. Mick, M.D.
May 7, 2005

Have you noticed that NOTHING IS EVER GOOD NEWS about the stock market or about the climate?

If there is unemployment, according to Democrats and other doomsayers, it's bad for the stock market. Then when unemployment goes down, the doom and gloom folks claim it is bad for the stock market because wage increases may be necessary to entice new workers, thus producing higher wage costs and lower profits. Then when profits go up, they suddenly become “obscene” and that also means something awful is happening.

Same with the climate. The incessant griping from the environmental wackos has been that the air is getting more polluted, increasing the greenhouse effect, causing global warming. (More on that later.)) But now there is documented evidence that the air is getting cleaner and clearer! Wonderful, you say. Heck no! According to the gloom-and-doom nutcakes, that only means that more sunlight may reach the earth and increase temperatures! (Get it? Dirty air causes global warming—and clean air causes global warming! This is a typical left-wing radical environmental wacko "lose-lose" situation. No matter what happens, it's the fault of corporations somehow and will result in catastrophe. But then if the air is cleaner, you ask, shouldn’t there be less greenhouse effect and the temperature would theoretically tend to go down? No, no! The environmental wacko gurus have spoken, they have their hearts set on global warming, and there isn’t anything you can do about it!

(Dirty little secret: The correct answer is NOBODY HAS ENOUGH DATA TO MAKE ANY SANE PREDICTIONS WHATSOEVER ABOUT FUTURE ATMOSPHERIC CHANGES!)

But never mind, just remember this: Whatever happens, it is all bad news.

"Our planet's air has cleared up in the past decade or two, allowing more sunshine to reach the ground, say two studies in Science this week.

Reductions in industrial emissions in many countries, along with the use of particulate filters for car exhausts and smoke stacks, seem to have reduced the amount of dirt in the atmosphere and made the sky more transparent.

That sounds like very good news. But the researchers say that more solar energy arriving on the ground will also make the surface warmer, and this may add to the problems of global warming. (Your friendly editorial comment by Brooks: Since studies done on temperatures outside urban development indicate GLOBAL COOLING, perhaps this clean air will help prevent the next Ice Age. Or maybe not!) More sunlight will also have knock-on effects on cloud cover, winds, rainfall and air temperature that are difficult to predict." (More editorial comment: Ah, yes! "...Difficult to predict." Indeed, IMPOSSIBLE TO PREDICT!)

Remember this the next time your friendly neighborhood wacko begins chanting about global warming.
