The Latest Economic News With Running Commentary

By Mr. Neil Levine
May 7, 2005

Reuters reports Alan Greenspan, Chairman of The Federal Reserve, said he feared what appeared to be a growing move toward trade protectionism. (Voice Over: Mr. Greenspan is 79 years old, his appointment expires around December and his bosses have been asking him easy questions. Comment: The last quarter point interest rate increase brings the current round of increases to two percent meaning your credit card balance of $1,000 you pay $20 more per year. On a $200,000 mortgage you pay $4,000 more per year (a pretty penny, if I do say so myself) and you don’t want to know what this costs large corporations.) Under the Headline “A Better Way to Fight Poverty,” “The New York Times” has an editorial about Anne Omolo, head teacher Of Sauri’s (Kenya) sole primary school having a food program that has boosted attendance to 100%. (Remark: This could be applied to India, Afghanistan and points east, north, west and south. See my essay of April 20, 2005 entitled “The Chinese Are Coming And Other Thoughts.”) “The New York Daily News” has a story on page 3 about two Catholic schoolgirls using a cell-phone camera to get a flasher arrested. “The New York Post” buried the same story on page 16. “The News” also reports SpongeBob SquarePants is back with 20 new episodes starting Saturday night, May 7, 2005. “Spongier, Bobbier, Squarier, Pineappleeerr, Krabbier Cakier.” Who Lives In A Pineapple Under The Sea? (Aside: Cell phone photos? What about Internet photos? See my May 2 essay entitled “Tutoring Kids Using SpongeBob” AND my April 27 essay entitled “Crime Fighting The Internet Way.” Right now the New York legislature is arguing over posting pictures of people convicted of what are called “sex crimes.”) USA Today has a story on page 3 entitled “Fruit Farms Withering in Northwest Drought” and mentions that five mountain reservoirs now capture less than a third of snowpack run off to the Yakima River in an area that grows apples, pears, cherries, apricots, peaches and nectarines. The drought has sparked calls for new reservoirs to store melted water. (Comment: See my essay of April 29 entitled “George W. Bush” goes nuclear.) Yahoo! Briefing Economic Calender reports the March Trade Balance will be reported Tuesday, May 11 and the deficit is expected to be $61.5 billion dollars. (Voice Over: This is next week and I was predicting a $67 billion short fall. I am not clairvoyant and leaks from government sources are subject to investigation by the FBI. I have been through one of those having to answer questions about anthrax, a subject I claim zero, nada, no expertise on. Basically, I am in favor of antibiotics and against disease. Read my Terri Schiavo essay of March 28, 2005.) “The Wall Street Journal” has a front page headline “To Preserve Forests Supporters Suggest Cutting Some Trees.” (N.B. See below.) The Associated Press reports that the Bush administration, in one of its biggest decisions on environmental issues, moved Thursday to pen up nearly a third of all remote national forest lands to road building, logging and other commercial ventures. (Comment: Read my April 11 piece entitled “Wildfires Are Dangerous.” I could always add so are politicians.) Friday, May 6, 2005 Reuters has a story about The Opposition In Canada having a chance to force elections with a vote of no confidence before June 16 with the subsequent elections to be held around July 25. Wow! (Question: Is Joe Clark running? Not the fella from New Jersey who I know went bye-bye but Conservative Joe.) “The New York Times” has a story on page A18 entitled “Bush Administration Roles Back Rule On Building Forest Roads,” USA Today has a front page story entitled “Bush Removes Logging Barrier” AND “The Wall Street Journal” has an article on page A6 with the headline “Bush Sets Aside Clinton’s Curbs On Forest Roads” alongside a story entitled “Greenspan Says Fannie, Freddie Need To Shrink.” (Editor’s Smart Remark: “Need I Say More?”) This is my 13th Essay for “Useless-Knowledge.com” and clearly I am quite proud of myself.
