The Book Comes Out Today

By Lee Zelhart
May 2, 2005

Well, the time has come. My book comes out today. The Ghost of the Cavalier should be hitting the shelves.

I'm hoping to see good sales. Everyone who has read it, mainly family and friends, have said they thought it was good. While you can't judge by bias opinion I still trust their point of view.

For instance my Sister-in-law, April. She's read part of the book as her time allows. She likes it. My daughter liked it, too. She has always told me if something was sucky. It means a lot to know I raised her to be brutally honest.

I also had the sister of my best friend read it. She thought it was excellent. I never had a chance to have my best friend read it. He was killed by a train last year before I'd finished it. I think he would have liked it as well. I trust the opinion of his sister, though.

It feels nice having a book out. It's like spending all your time working over something and suddenly there it is for everyone to see. Like a work of art.

Like a work of art I suppose it's a matter of taste and what kind of things you like, but this isn't a massive tome. It's a nice little book which wouldn't probably take long to read. Heck, I started reading my author copy and couldn't put it down; and I knew the ending.

The story involves a missing medallion called the Rose of St. Patrick. Sir Winston Hersley and his trusty assistant Mr.Hawley come in to find it. The trail leads through secret tunnels, a cemetery, secret passages, and includes a little legerdemain by Sir Winston. The Rose of St.Patrick was originally presented by Bonnie Prince Charlie(otherwise Prince Charles Edward Stuart)to a group of Jacobites. The medal of course is fictitious, but beside that the case is still more interesting not only where and how Sir Winston retrieves the Rose, but the supernatural help he gets. Therefore the title:The Ghost of the Cavalier. I will only say the Ghost isn't who Sir Winston thought it would be. I'm not going to spoil the ending. I'll let you by the book.

I'm hoping for good sales. I think it's worth the price. If anyone buys a copy I'd also like to hear some input. I want to know what everyone else thinks. I'm sure not everyone will find it to taste, but I think a majority will really like it.

I like the job the publisher did on the cover. I had a design for it, but due to the age of my poor old computer it couldn't be resized to fit their needs. Still I think the cover is good. I set the story in Edinburgh, Scotland(loosely)and though I hadn't been there I wanted to pay homage to one of my favorite mystery authors; Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I hope the good people of Edinburgh don't mind. Actually I think there is a lot of thanks to the city of Edinburgh for mystery fans. The real life prototype of Sherlock Holmes, Doctor Joseph Bell, taught a young Conan Doyle his stuff there at the University. I'd like to go there, too. Maybe one day I'll be able to walk the halls in Conan Doyle's footsteps. Hopefully I'll sell enough books to go there.

It'd be a dream come true. To see the city Sir Arthur Conan Doyle walked, that would be Bonnie!
