Mar. 31, 2005 When a young woman's father walks her down the aisle on her wedding day, is he giving her away in only the figurative sense or a literal one as well? With the present occurrence that is taking place in Florida concerning Terri Schiavo, it makes you wonder about how serious marriage is in that the rights of the parents no longer seem to be valid, especially as long as the married couple's marriage is not dissolved or ends up in divorce. During the past weeks and days, we have all seen or heard of the many attempts of Mrs. Schiavo's parents to have their daughter back, whether or not they were appealing to the courts or Mr. Schiavo himself, but it seems to be a losing battle, why? The sanctity and power of marriage. Unless otherwise specified in a pre-nuptial agreement or some other document, when a person marries, his/her spouse becomes responsible for important decisions in that person's life. And we all know how important the answers concerning those decisions can be, for a simple yes or no can make all the difference in the time it takes to blink your eye. I guess you just have to hope for the best and trust that the person with whom you exchange vows on one of the most memorable days of your life; your wedding day, will think carefully about those decisions if ever a difficult and trying situation were to arise.
