2006 Elections

By Craig Chamberlain
Mar. 31, 2005

This is a combination of not being able to think of anything else to write about, that and I have been reading about the elections. So I decided to go to the crystal ball and look into the future. Yeah, I know the elctions aren't until November, next year, and I am really jumping the gun but I wanted to be the first here to write about this.I will only talk about the interesting races.

Florida- Senator Bill Nelson will be a top target for the GOP in 2006. Nelson a Democratic centrist, is in a state that is trending GOP. The GOP holds the governors mansion, the state house, and senate, most of the house seats, and one of the senate seats. This race will certainly draw a lot of Republicans that want to be senators. Call this a GOP pickup.

Tennessee- With Bill Frist retiring about every politician in the volunteer state is looking into this. Still, I don't see a democrat winning this race. Their best shot is Harold Ford Jr, but he probably won't give up his house seat. This seat stays GOP.

West Virginia- Is Robert Byrd vulnerable? Apparently someone thinks so. The democrats are running around raising money for the old Klansman, and the state GOP thinks they can beat him. Now that Byrd is in the minority party he can't bring home the federal dollars as effectivley as he used to. If Congresswoman Capito runs she could make the race interesting. Age could also claim Senator Byrd. Still I think the Democrats keep this seat, though nothing would make me happier to see Byrd voted out.

Maryland- With the retirement of Paul Sarbanes this safe democrat seat becomes a tossup. The Democratic nominee could be Kweisei Mfume, the former leader of the NAACP. The GOP is trying to recruit Lt. Governor Michael Steele. If it is Steele Vs. Mfume the GOP wins. Toss up.

Pennsylvania- Santorum has drawn a tough opponent, and the democrats would love nothing better than to beat a senator they despise. Casey could beat Santorum but it will be a close race. Toss up.

Texas- There is a lot of Talk that Senator Hutchison will leave the Senate and take on Governor Perry. No matter what she does this seat stays with the GOP.

Washington-Maria Cantwell won her first term in 2000 with a narrow victory, and her campaign is deeply in debt. Some strong republicans are looking into this race. I call this one an upset for the GOP.

Nebraska- Ben Nelson will draw a strong challenger, but being a fairly conservative democrat will keep him alive. Stays democrat.

North Dakota- The white house is trying to recruit Governor Hoeven into the race. If he decides to run it could be a GOP win. Conrad is safe otherwise. Stays democrat.

Minnesota- Dayton is leaving office and the GOP thinks they have a good chance. Congressman Kennedy could pick up this seat for the GOP. GOP win.

Ok, that's all the races that have the potential to be competitive. I got it out of my system and I won't write about another election again until next year.
